Charles Owen
I have been executor for my father's estate. He was with TalkTalk for several years and I kept on the account for about a year after he died, until his house was sold. It was when I tried to close the account I realised how utterly ghastly this company is. Rang on 1 September to say house was changing ownership on 18 September and needed to close account. Impossible. You have to give 30 days notice whatever the circumstances. I asked whether they could stop new owners from using the phone after we sold the property. Yes, they would put a bar on it after 3 days. Actually they did it within 2 hours, cutting me off without warning. Needless to say, they then swiped their regular monthly DD payment (approx £45) from my bank account 18 days after they disabled the account. This happened also to be the day of change of ownership, so TalkTalk cheerfully took money for providing no service at all. After 35 days, I rang to ask where my final bill was. Insisted on putting me through to "bereavement unit", where a person trained in sympathetic murmurings finally told me a charge had been generated on 4 October, well after the 30 days notice, and well after it was possible to use the account. I still do not understand how this is possible, but apparently I am due a refund of £2.36! This looks like a well-organised plan for relieving people of their cash without providing any service at all. But in the end, I am so relieved not to be talking to them ever again, I think it cheap at the price. Never, ever go near these scoundrels.
