This platform presents itself as a convenient way to sell your gently used clothing, but the reality is quite different. In fact, it feels more like a scam designed to extract as much merchandise as possible while giving users next to nothing in return. **Misleading Service Structure** The issues started from the very beginning. I purchased an *expedited kit* for $35, thinking this would make the process quicker and more efficient. Additionally, I paid an extra $11 to have any unlisted items returned to me. However, despite paying these fees, I never received my unlisted items back, and ThredUp made no effort to explain why. This in itself felt deceptive, as they claim to return items but clearly do not follow through on that promise. **Hidden Fees and Unclear Policies** The entire service is riddled with hidden fees and confusing policies. ThredUp does not allow you to set prices for your items, which is particularly frustrating given that they frequently run deep discounts to attract buyers. These discounts drastically reduce the amount you can earn, and you have zero control over it. Even worse, the platform doesn’t start paying you until each batch of items meets a $15 earnings threshold. Only after that threshold is met do you begin to earn a mere 3% commission. After shipping 27 high-quality items, including designer handbags and clothing from well-known brands such as Madewell, Topshop, Nordstrom, and Neiman Marcus, I earned a grand total of $45. The payout system is insultingly low considering the value of the items I sent, making it clear that ThredUp profits heavily while consignors get next to nothing. **Non-Existent Customer Support** Perhaps one of the most frustrating aspects of ThredUp is the abysmal customer service. There is no phone number to call if you have an issue, and the live chat system is consistently broken. When you do manage to open a chat window, it’s just an automated bot that says they will email you, but they never do. You are left completely stranded with no recourse or help, which makes resolving any issues nearly impossible. **Poor Reputation and Lack of Accountability** A quick glance at ThredUp’s Better Business Bureau (BBB) rating should be enough to make anyone think twice before using the service. They are not BBB accredited, and they currently hold a shocking 1.1/5 rating, with over 1,000 complaints filed against them. This is a clear red flag and further evidence that their business practices are not only misleading but potentially unethical. **Final Verdict: Avoid at All Costs** In conclusion, ThredUp is a thoroughly disappointing and exploitative service. The platform’s model is clearly designed to benefit them, not the consignors. The fees are excessive, the payout is dismal, and their customer service is virtually non-existent. If you are looking to clean out your closet, I strongly recommend avoiding ThredUp. You would be far better off donating your items to a shelter where they will be put to good use, and you can receive a tax write-off in return. I cannot believe this company has been in existence for as long as it has, and I truly hope others can avoid the frustrating, time-consuming, and frankly insulting experience I had with ThredUp. Save yourself the hassle and look elsewhere.
