“Almost perfect system. It took about 4 hrs to watch the videos and do unit quizzes. Took 15 minutes to write the open book test that they allow 75 minutes for. Did not have the book but still got 100%. Found my new knowledge on buoys super useful on my 500 km trip through the great lakes that started the next day. Some would say perfect learning system. Well, almost. Only complaint is that they don't tell you which questions you get wrong on the 5 unit quizzes. So no way to ensure that you learn the missed elements. I got between 80 and 100% on the unit quizzes but did not have any idea of which questions I had wrong going into the final test. I guess I just got lucky and they did not ask the ones I got wrong. But I would likely be a more knowledgeable and safer boater, if I could have learned the correct answers to the missed questions. If not for this one issue, I would have scored this review Very Good and 10.”

“A bit tedious to have a minimum time limit on each page. Perhaps a minimum time limit on each moduel instead”

“Take a break after every module. Walk around the house. Have a snack. It takes 4 hours so don't try to do it all in one sitting.”

“The course offers very helpful information, but as you become a boater there are additional items that I find could have assisted me further. Focusing more on the buoyants and there definitions and what to safely do around them, specifically coming out of channels, maybe more helpful for first time boaters getting out on the waterways. But very informative and helpful.”

“There were sections of the lesson where the sound did not appear and therefore you had to read. The lesson would also freeze up numerous times and you would have to go back to the previous screen and watch that again to continue. I am a 50 year experienced boater but I learned a lot from the course. It was very extensive and educational. Suggestion would be after a person passed the entire exam display those questions that a person got wrong. If they got a question wrong there is no way to know what the correct answer would be. After all it is supposed to be educational.”

“I needed to get my boating license within two days of a planned vacation, and the BOATsmart program made that absolutely possible and easy. Also nice to have a place to go back and check when you're not sure about something. I highly recommend this program.”

“I Really liked how I could do it on my own time. The only thing I didn't like, was the test you didn't know what you missed so you would know what you did wrong. If you would show what you missed I think it would be 100% great.”

“Boat Smart offers a great course that actually teaches you the things you need to know, not just hand you your license and send you out on the water to be a potential danger to everyone else! Out on the water I encounter plenty of boaters who clearly dont know enough about navigaion rules and safe boating. I have benefitted and remained safe due to the knowledge I acquired through this course. It is comprehensive and engaging course. Not just a pile of info to overwealm you. I would recommend it to anyone interested in genuine learning and posessing the know how to be safe and just enjoy your time on the water.”

“I already had the book and read it thoroughly. It was tedious having to go through page after page with the information I had already studied. Therefore the test took hours which was unnecessary for me. Also why was there no way to speed up the pages once one had read them? I am a relatively fast reader and this test seems to be geared for extremely slow readers (I spent most of my time waiting for the next page).”

Hi Ann - Thanks for taking the time to provide a review. At this time, we are unable to change the length of the course as the 3-hour timer is required in Canada by Transport Canada, and required in the U.S. by NASBLA. We understand this may be frustrating for students, however, please understand that the 3-hour timer ensures that all students are able to fully understand all of the course content. Every course provider must meet this requirement and in order to be able to take the course online, from the comfort of home, students must spend 3 hours in the course. Thanks for hanging in there - your 3 hours of studying will get you a lifetime of safe boating fun!

“At the time when I was wanting to get my boat licence BoatSmart was the only online course that I could find. As I am a visual learner, I really found their videos and audio files to be extremely useful and helpful! There is a lot of material to know and cover, and this course utilized the best methods to deliver the material to the person studying the course. I really enjoyed myself as far as online courses go.. Sam”

“I would recommend this course to anyone, not only is it informative, but it makes total sense. I did this course with the aim of simply playing around on a seadoo, but now I see there's a lot more to being safe on the open water than just staying away from everyone else. It's an eye opener and really will save lives.”
