“Overall: We had a lovely time at Casa Antonella, one of the properties on a gated estate, located high above the village of Varenna. Living in the large and comfortable house and enjoying the many views it afforded made for a memorable vacation. Enjoyed Most: THE VIEWS OF LAKE COMO and the surrounding mountains. Some of the higher peaks were snow-capped in late September and early October. The dining room and terraces were the perfect perches for watching the cloud formations, sunsets, and changing weather patterns. The small swimming pool was still filled with ice cold water for a bracing dip during a warm day and the pool area had several chaise lounges for taking in the sun. The hot water heater in the entry way produced lots of hot water for doing the dishes and showering. Enjoyed Least: This being Italy, the electrical system is underpowered by US standards and appliances such as the oven and electric coffee maker and kettle often blew a fuse if used at the same time. But there is a fuse box in the entry way to access to flip switches and power up. We did not use the electric dishwasher or washing machine (couldn't figure out the dials) but did some hand laundry and used the drying rack on the top floor terrace for drying the old fashioned way. Also, some of the shower stalls leaked but not so bad that it caused floods. The bathtub in the largest bathroom is simply too narrow for any normal sized person so we didn't bother using it. Surrounding Area: The location of the villa high above Varenna next to the tiny hilltop village of Vezio was unique. Vezio has the look of a medieval village with stone streets, tiny stone houses, and the ruins of a medieval castle complete with resident raptors. Access to the town via automobile is along a series of narrow switchback roads. By foot, one must hike up a precipitous pathway to get from Varenna on the lakefront to the villa. Nearby Events or Locales: The villa is located high above the village of Varenna in Vezio. One must drive up a steep switchback road to reach a single lane road to reach the villa which is located directly behind and above a large white gate. One opens and closes the gate with a key. It is possible to hike up to the villa from Varenna but one must be physically fit to make it. Therefore, a car is a necessity for reaching the property from Varenna. No cars are permitted in Vezio - it's accessible by pedestrians only. But that's part of the charm of the place. Tips or Restaurants: Rent a car and be prepared to nimbly walk around natural stone pathways and staircases which dot the villa. Buy food and wine in EuroSpin supermarket south of Varenna in Lierna or Mandelo del Lario or buy small supplies of things in the shops in Varenna. If driving a car, note that parking is very limited. White parking lines are free, blue require paying for a parking ticket, and yellow lines are for residents. Our party cooked and ate at home which allowed us to savor the excellent food and wine of the area but there are many formal and informal spots to eat in town. If renting in the autumn bring several warm sweaters because there is no heat in the house despite having two fireplaces. Directions: If driving from Malpensa airport, drive directly to Como then head east to Lecco and up the east side of the lake. This allows you to avoid taking the ferry from Menaggio to Varenna. Our rental car had GPS in Russian so we couldn't use it and had to rely on our trusty Michelin map and own sense of direction. On returning to Malpensa, follow the same route. I made the mistake of taking the autostrada to Milan and ended up in the central city and no where near the airport. Check In Out: It was seamless since I called the property owner the day before we left and told her when we expected to arrive. Upon arrival at the villa gate, we rang the doorbell and were met by Stella, one of the keyholders. She signed us in and took our security deposit and gave us a quick tour of the house. Although she didn't speak English, we managed to get the gist of her information.”

“Overall: Wonderful. "Housekeepers" Alex and Olga made sure that we had everything we needed, beginning with their greeting on arrival, through two weeks of suggestions and translations, to our final tearful farewell. Enjoyed Most: It was furnished like an elegant, private home, and SO well equipped with everything we could POSSIBLY need! Perfect for six friends - and could have been eight. Enjoyed Least: We would like to mention something, to make a balanced report. But we can't think of a thing. Surrounding Area: Great paved walking routes in the area. Closeness to lovely Orvieto was wonderful. The neighbors inside the walls of our "compound" were friendly, too! Nearby Events or Locales: Nearest small town of Viceno very walkable wasn't much of a town, but the next closest town, Castel Viscardo, had everything and was a stiff walk away - 6 km round trip! Tips or Restaurants: If there was ever a property that supplied everything, this is it including umbrellas by the front door. There is NOTHING else to bring. Great written restaurant suggestions complied by the owners helped us find several perfect spots. Our favorite was in the hotel La Pergoletta in Castel Viscardo. Directions: We used the map of Lazio that Rentvillas.com sent to us in advance. The hamlet of Benano was shown on that map but not on most others. We also pulled up Benano on Google Maps. So no problem finding it! Check In Out: Alex and Olga made checking in and out an experience rivaling anything we have ever encountered. So exciting when we arrived and met them, and so sad to leave. No issue at all getting our security deposit returned, although we would have understood if there HAD been a charge for the gallons of their wine we drank!”

“Overall: Very pleasant - relaxing. Managers who greeted us were really nice . Enjoyed Most: Spacious bedrooms. Well appointed living-kitchen area and outdoor area. Enjoyed Least: There was nothing we disliked. Surrounding Area: Enjoyed the old town environment. The main pedestrian street of the town was just around the corner from the house. Nearby Events or Locales: We were around the corner from the old town of Alacati. Very handy. Tips or Restaurants: We used this as a base to visit Ephesus - this is a day trip. Well worth seeing. Visited Cesme a few times and lucky enough to see an international kite surfing competition. Did a day trip about 4.5hrs - driving around the peninsula, Hasseki, Karaburun, etc. Really enjoyed seeing rural Turkey on this coast.”

“Overall: We had a great time. The Amalfi Coast is amazing! So much to see and do. Yet the villa was quiet and relaxing. Enjoyed Most: The view has to be 1. We spent every evening on the porch watching sunsets and admiring the scenery. The rooms, except for the kitchen, were spacious. The furniture was comfortable. Enjoyed Least: Upon arrival, the floors were swept but not clean; there were dead bugs in the tub in one bathroom and the shower needed a good cleaing. Also, one guest cut himself on the edge of the shower. The sea is 12 meters deep where the villa sea access is located. Only for strong swimmers. We were upset that we had to pay 280 euros to park our car down the road from the villa in a restaurant parking lot with no overnight security - when the 3 or 4 spaces behind the gate at the villa remained empty for the entire 2 weeks with only one space occupied on the weekends. We couldn't understand why the owner could not have made arrangements for us to rent one of the spaces. Editor's Note: The owner has confirmed that the maid will be more dilligent in the future with the cleaning of the apartment. She also confirmed that the parking spaces above do not belong to her and cannot be used. If clients insist upon bringing a car, the restaurant lot is the only option. She strongly recommends that clients do not bring a car, as it is easy to get around with drivers and public transportation. Rentvillas agrees with this. Surrounding Area: A bus stop was just a short walk from the villa. This made it so easy to travel to all the spectacular sights on the Amalfi coast and beyond. Between the buses and the train we never had to use our car--a definite plus considering the curvy road along the coast. Nearby Events or Locales: Minori is the closest town. Just a 10 minute downhill walk. It is a small town that does have a beach but is not full of tourists like Amalfi and Maiori, the next closest towns. It has a wonderful park along the beach. It is the only place along the coast with Roman villa ruins. The people are very friendly. We were able to get everything we needed for cooking at the local market shops. Tips or Restaurants: You don't really need a car. Take the train from Naples or Rome to Salerno, then catch a SITA bus toward Amalfi and get off at the stop by the Best Western. A 5 minute walk back toward town will get you to the villa which is at number 8 on the sea side. Bring bug spray and citronella candles as the mosquitoes and no-seeums are plentiful in the evening!Our favorite restaurant in Minori was Giardiniello, Corso Vitorio Emanuelle 17. A small gelato shop is on the the same street, a little closer to the the main road, was also very good. Just up beyond the Best Western is the restaurant, Il Boschetto, which is owned by Stefano. He serves dishes made with local fish and wine from his father's vineyard. Check In Out: The owner took me into town to show me the market and introduced me the the owner, good restaurants, and the location of the tourist information office.”

“Overall: Overall we loved the villa, particularly the outdoor area and pool. The view was absolutely beautiful - olive groves, vineyards and hills, and the staff were friendly and helpful. In addition, the location was good. Enjoyed Most: The outdoor area and pool were fantastic, the beds were very comfortable, the bathrooms were great, and the kitchen was modern and functional. In addition, the staff were friendly and helpful. Enjoyed Least: There was an unpleasant odor particularly in the TV area and middle bedroom. In addition, the windows were very small and some didn't have screens, so it was difficult to get airflow. Surrounding Area: Stunning scenery, easily accessible grocery store, and a fantastic restaurant very close by. In addition, the villa was centrally located so day-trips to surrounding centers worked out well. Nearby Events or Locales: Romita - it was a very small village. It was probably within walking distance. Tavernelle was larger and had a grocery store but it wasn't within walking distance. Tips or Restaurants: I think the villa was fairly well-equipped. However, you do need to supply your own laundry soap, dishwasher soap, and salt and pepper. Directions: We didn't use a GPS and we were fine. The directions were fairly straight forward and easy to follow.”

“Overall: This was a great choice for our family. Enjoyed Most: We loved eating all our meals outdoors. The pool was refreshing after our hot and sometimes dusty day trips. The proximity to town can't be beat. Enjoyed Least: The phone kept ringing every few minutes at times, apparently because of marketing calls. We had to take it off the hook. The internet cut out once, but the property manager fixed it that day. Surrounding Area: We felt it was accessible to so many nice areas to visit: les Baux, Avignon, Arles, Roussillon, the village of Bories, and many more. Nearby Events or Locales: St Remy de Provence was the closest town, definitely within walking distance, roughly 5 min. It's a great town, large enough to have a decent grocery store and interesting places to visit: Glanum, Sanitarium where Van Gogh lived the last year of his life, but small enough to be easily navigable. Tips or Restaurants: There are two restaurants in nearby Paradou that we'd recommend: Le Petit Bistro and Bistrot Paradou. Check In Out: The property managers were very nice, friendly, helpful, available during the week and prompt when we were ready to check out.”

“Overall: The whole family enjoyed our week in the villa. The owner was very warm and welcoming. She gave us a huge basket of fresh fruit and vegetables from the market, plus some pasta and a bottle of Chianti, so that we wouldn't have to shop on our first night. She also gave us some good travel recommendations and she took us into town a couple of mornings later, to show us where to buy the best produce and where to get the best pizza. There were lots of thoughtful touches - lotions, shampoos, soap, tissues, adaptor plugs, radio, CD's and player, hair dryer. She also provided swim towels. It really felt like home. The housekeeper came twice during our stay to clean, wash any pots and pans etc. and to provide clean towels. We did not use the spa-pool as we preferred swimming in the Mediterranean. It might be more useful in cooler weather as it is much more a spa than a pool - it is only 15 ft x 9ft and made of fibre glass. Enjoyed Most: We loved the patios which had great views and were wonderful for outdoor dining. We had breakfast on the kitchen-side patio every morning. We loved the coziness of the kitchen and family room area. The cooks could socialize with the rest of the family while cooking. The living room was also a nice spot during the day. Enjoyed Least: The master bed was on a raised platform with two steps. They were a bit of a hazard, especially if you had to get up during the night. The master bath was very spacious and modern. The bed in one of the other rooms - which was a lovely room with a great view and a balcony - was only a full-size bed not totally comfortable for an adult couple. The shared bathroom smelled a bit musty at times but was generally OK. The bathroom downstairs was fine.We thought the living room would have been more warm and welcoming in the evening with softer lighting - such as some standing lamps instead of the overhead candelabra. Also, the pillows were uncomfortable. Surrounding Area: We loved the views of the bay and the privacy, while only being a short walk to a restaurant, the bus, the supermarket and a patisserie. The garden and surrounding trees were lush, with a hammock and fountains. Very peaceful. Nearby Events or Locales: La Spezia is ideal as a jumping off point for Cinque Terra. The train station is seven minutes away from the villa, and the trains to Cinque Terra are frequent and cheap. La Spezia itself also has charm and interest, contrary to how most guidebooks describe it. We also enjoyed the next coastal town - Portovenere - which you can reach either via car, bus or ferry, but not the train. Tips or Restaurants: Rent a scooter rather than a car - parking is not only hard to find but you can only park in one spot for an hour which makes a day trip a gamble that you won't get a parking ticket. The trains and buses are very convenient and much faster than driving. We took cabs to and from bus and train stations. Check In Out: The owner was very efficient in getting us checked in and out, while at the same time giving us helpful information at check-in about where to go and what to see. She took us to the train station after we'd settled up.”

“Overall: Overall our group of twelve had a wonderful time at Chateau de Chance. Our part of the group flew into Toulouse airport via Heathrow and the drive to Aragon was extremely manageable less than an hour. My brothers and their families flew in to Carcassonne Airport which is about a 10 minute drive. The chateau has a charm about it and it does feel like a very unique place to stay. The bedrooms were generally spacious, with every one being a little different. The property offers a nice mix of old world feel with some nice improvements. Enjoyed Most: The first view of Aragon as you come round a corner is special but what I liked most is that this is a very unique property, different from most of the properties that we considered - a medieval chateau, set in a row of houses. You feel like you are entering a secret world when you enter the front door. Our experience with Chef Peter at the chateau was wonderful and visitors to the chateau should consider using his services if possible - not cheap but well worth it and comparable to going out on the town. Enjoyed Least: I must agree with some of the other comments about the furniture. I do think that the living room would benefit from an upgrade - the furniture is not particularly comfortable and there doesn't seem to be a sense of 'central design' to the large room. Much of the outdoor furniture is suffering from wear and tear, particularly the chaise lounges and the chairs. Somehow the pool looked bigger in the photos but it is a great addition to the property, especially on the hottest of summer days. The kids loved it despite our unseasonably cool weather. It provides a nice centerpiece for the garden. Perhaps a few more pool towels would be nice. Editor's Note: The owners have had the outside furniture repaired. August 2010 Surrounding Area: Aragon is a quaint, hilly, little, historic village that is well worth a walk abound. As mentioned, it has very few amenities, but offers a lot of photo opportunities. The major attraction of the surrounding area is Carcassonne's walled medieval city La Cite. It is about 8 miles from Aragon if you drive the most direct route from Aragon, following the signs to Carcassonne and then for La Cite. However for a more breath-taking first impression of this walled medieval city, I would suggest that you enter Carcassonne from its southern approach, the motorway side. Nearby Events or Locales: Not really. Aragon had some very basic amenities as described in the information package so that was no surprise. The nearest functional small town was Pennautier about 4-5 miles away - definitely not walkable. There are some village amenities - bar, boulangerie, tabac, fine restaurant and wine tasting at the chateau. On the outskirts of Pennautier, on the route to Carcassonne, there were all of the mall-type amenities that you would expect to find in a large town - supermarkets, gas stations, fast food, etc. Tips or Restaurants: La Bergerie has received many well-deserved recommendations. The couple that own the place have made it a true foodie destination. They have some extraordinary items on the menu and it remains reasonably priced. We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of our lunch at the Chateau Pennautier. Their menu offered a good selection of reasonably prices dishes and a good wine selection, much of it local. Their wait staff very knowledgeable, could explain menu items in mouth watering detail and all in very good English sad to admit, a necessity for our group. The facility also has a wine tasting room and shop. Their wines are very good and very affordable. Directions: Instructions were generally good. Some of us got a little turned around but realised it by the next roundabout - obviously directions are harder to follow in the dark! The proximity to La Bergerie is definitely the main thing to emphasise. I didn't try GPS coordinates but I did have a Google Map Satellite photo that gave a good sense of where the property was.”

“Overall: Very good. However, it was 104 most days and didn't cool off much at night. Good home base for day trips. Enjoyed Most: The restaurant was excellent and the pool was wonderful. Our apartment was huge. Enjoyed Least: No air conditioning. Surrounding Area: Beautiful countryside. We had our own car, so we did a lot of day trips exploring Tuscany. Florence was only about 30 minutes away. Nearby Events or Locales: You could walk to Montagnana but we had a car and it was too hot to walk. The next closest town is Montespertoli. We enjoyed exploring both. Tips or Restaurants: Bring a cutting board and good slicing knife. You'll need it for the yummy cantaloupe and fresh tomatoes. Go to the Coop Grocery store and get some prosciutto to serve with the cantaloupe and some fresh mozzarella and basil for a quick Caprese Salad. However, that was usually lunch. We ate out all nights but one and we loved Il Focolare in Montagnana. The outside patio at the back was beautiful and the food was excellent. We also loved a place in Montespertoli that Stephani from the castle office recommended. It was something like "artistvino". Not the best atmosphere, but outstanding food. And don't forget the restaurant at the castle was very good as well. The one other thing you need to bring is a book light because there's not much lighting. Oh, and don't forget the OFF! The mosquitos feast at night because you need to keep the windows open. Directions: We used our GPS. Download Italy before you leave and you'll not have a problem. My husband drove like a local. And we never got lost once. Check In Out: No problems. And our room was not to be available until 5pm but we arrived at 3pm and got checked in immediately.”

“Overall: Our experience was very nice. The location was beautiful and the unit was very large. Enjoyed Most: The view was beautiful and it was very nice being in the winery. Enjoyed Least: The kitchen was small and did not have many pots and pans. Surrounding Area: The location was convenient to all the sites in the Tuscan region. Nearby Events or Locales: Caponne was the nearest town. It was not in walking distance. Tips or Restaurants: Don't count on the baker coming as scheduled. She did not come 3 of the 6 days.”

“Overall: Very good. The rooms were very large and the bedrooms were excellent. Enjoyed Most: The size of the rooms and the elevator. The elevator is a big plus. Enjoyed Least: There is noise on the street late at night. It is surprising since it is on a side street but the traffic noise carries. This was not a big problem for us but could be if someone is a light sleeper. Surrounding Area: The area is very good. Very safe and a close walk to everything. Would definitely stay there again. Tips or Restaurants: Giovanni's restaurant just below the apartment is excellent and would definitely recommend it. The apartment is well equipped and the washing machine worked great. Mariolino met us and was very helpful. Overall it was an excellent experience. Check In Out: Mariolino was great and I was very impressed.”

“Overall: Very pleasant. Enjoyed Most: Exceptionally clean and very well furnished with everything that you could need. Loved having the laundry access. Enjoyed Least: Really, no issues here. Surrounding Area: Very well kept neighbourhood, good grocery shopping within easy walking distance. Nearby Events or Locales: Estepona...walking was about 45 minutes, but not a problem overall. Tips or Restaurants: Everything you could need is there including blow dryer and iron...Went to "Swing" restaurant which was a less than 5 minute walk - great food and service! Directions: The owner picked us up at the bus station...forget asking the bus driver to let you off at Hotel Elba - the bus we were on will only stop at the bus station.”

“Overall: The villa was very spacious and in good condition. Enjoyed Most: Nice pool and quiet backyard. Really enjoyed the open air deck. Enjoyed Least: Too warm at night. The bedrooms need fans. Surrounding Area: We really like the Arenal beach area. The beach was beautiful and the promenade along the beach was filled with wonderful shops and restaurants. Nearby Events or Locales: There were a few shops and stores in walking distance, but a car is really necessary to see the area. Tips or Restaurants: Several good restaurant recommendations including Lungo Mare for Italian, Monsoon Thai, and India Palace buffet. Directions: You really need a GPS system to find the villa. The house numbering system in the development is not very intuitive.”

“Overall: Overall, everyone had a fantastic time. The area was spectacular, the accommodations were good, and the owners and caretakers very accommodating. Enjoyed Most: The view was spectacular. It really did not get any more relaxing than sitting poolside every evening and enjoying cocktails and appetizers. For an old castle somewhere in the neighborhood of 500 years old, the bedrooms were well maintained. However, people looking for luxury and new age convenience should take heed: the place shows its age in places. Enjoyed Least: The showers in the bathrooms in most cases were inadequate by American standards. Often just a hose attached to a shower head... very small and cramped. And hot water was at a premium. Some guests may find the fact that the caretaker lives on site to be discomforting, but he was quiet and only appeared on request. Also, he was very helpful providing things we were missing. Particularly on the weekend, as the castle apparently has some historical significance, our stay was interrupted by people wandering on to the property to take photos of the castle, not realizing it was private property. Surrounding Area: The view was spectacular, the people were friendly, the prices very reasonable, and the food was excellent. Siena, Lucignano, Monte San Savino, Montepulciano were all a short driving distance away. Nearby Events or Locales: Ciggiano is literally fifty feet from the gate. But there is nothing there. Monte San Savino is the closest town with services 3.5 miles away - and a 45-minute walk to the Post Office/Bank/Supermarket/Gelateria. 5 miles from the Old Walled Town. Tips or Restaurants: 1. A word of warning the driveway is dirt and stone, and extremely steep. I would not recommend having a manual transmission if you are a novice. It is extremely difficult to navigate. 2. La Terrase was an excellent restaurant, but really you could not go wrong anywhere. 3. Most EVERYTHING is closed on Sunday, so Saturday arrivals should stock up at the supermarket. Directions: Directions were adequate but required a leap of faith in that the directions specify something to the effect of "get off the exit,go left, and past the first light follow the sign to Albergo..." The problem is, that first light does not come up for quite some time, maybe five minutes of driving through neighborhoods, causing one to second guess themselves a bit. Check In Out: Caretaker was at the house when we arrived and provided a tour of the facilities. Owners were very friendly and accommodating. Checkout was a breeze.”

Surrounding Area: The entire area is beautiful. Nearby Events or Locales: Lucolena was the nearest town. It really wasn't within walking distance. However, you will probably have a car while touring Tuscany so it really isn't a problem. Tips or Restaurants: Everything was provided. While checking in, please ask questions about scenic drives, places to eat, etc. They gave great advice.”

“Overall: The property was very comfortable. Enjoyed Most: It was spacious, and secure. The stereo and a great selection of music. Great place to come back to after a day of sightseeing. Enjoyed Least: No private outside areas for smoking or socialising. Surrounding Area: Close to groceries and patisseries.
