About Headstrong Counselling:

At Headstrong Counselling, we embody a vision that goes beyond the traditional boundaries of counselling and psychotherapy. Rooted in social justice and evidence-based practice, our mission is to democratise access to high-quality counselling for every member of our community. We firmly believe that everyone, irrespective of their racial identity, income level, religious beliefs, or sexual orientation, deserves the right to quality mental health support.
We recognise that addressing the community's mental health support deficit is not merely a service but a fundamental necessity. To this end, our commitment is two-fold: First, we strive to provide low-cost, yet high-quality counselling sessions, ensuring that essential mental health support is not a privilege but a right accessible to all. .
Second, we are dedicated to fostering a counsellor base that mirrors the diversity and richness of our community. Through rigorous clinical supervision, ongoing professional development, specialised workshops, and inclusion and diversity training, we ensure that our therapists are not only skilled clinicians but also culturally competent and socially conscious practitioners.
At the heart of our ethos lies the conviction that a sustainable and quality mental health service should not be reliant on external funding, grants, or governmental resources. We are committed to creating a self-sustaining model that flourishes independently, ensuring uninterrupted and reliable support to those we serve.

Though I am unsure how much I benefited from my sessions, I was very grateful to receive low cost counselling sessions. I was slightly surprised to have had no contact or follow up after my decision to finish sessions - I was told I would receive an email and confirmation. I think that ending process should be ironed out slightly better.

I received an excellent service from Headstrong counselling and my counsellor was absolutely stellar, really calm, insightful and deeply dedicated to our work together.

I really enjoyed my Headstrong Counselling at the start, it was a great introduction to counselling and my counsellor was really personable and nice. However, as time went on I felt I wasn't getting what I needed out of the sessions. I wanted to unpack and analyse my thought patterns but would often have sessions focused around CBT and coping mechanism, which wasn't really what I was after. I tried to prompt the sessions to talk in more details about the Why but my counsellor didn't seem to want to venture down that route so I follower her lead as opposed to fighting for what would be most worthwhile - but having never had counselling before I wasn't sure what the process was. Sessions became more a chore with me trying to think about things to talk about. I felt at times that she didn't know what to say and I understand they are in training but it wasn't very comfortable for me to navigate as I felt like she wasn't sure and didn't know of I was the one who had said too much. Counsellor also double booked and forgot multiple times, so a mixed experience.

Good afternoon, Thank you for sharing your experience with our services here - I am grateful that you have shared your feedback here - this will help us to improve our service for future clients, and to ensure we can continue to grow and provide the best possible support for those who need it. I'm glad to hear that your therapy started off well and that you had a positive experience at the beginning of the process. However I am sincerely sorry to hear that you felt that therapy became a chore and that you weren't able to focus on what felt worthwhile for you to explore during your time in therapy due to what sounds like a mismatch with your counsellor. On top of that, having multiple sessions missed or double-booked by your counsellor is unacceptable and not at all the service we pride ourselves on providing. While the majority of the counsellor at our low-cost service are trainees on placement, we can offer a broad variety of therapeutic approaches with different counsellors - if you find that your first match doesn't quite fit. If you would be willing to try our service again then we would gladly discuss this further with you to match you with a counsellor whose approach and experience would better fit your needs - please email us at assessments@headstrongcounselling.co.uk if you would be interested in this. In any instances where someone feels there is an issue with the support being provided by your counsellor, we ask that they contact our assessments team in order to discuss the issue and to explore next steps. Whether you would like to try our services again or not, thank you again for your feedback here and our sincerest apologies for the negative experiences you've shared here. We hope to hear from you soon, if you would like to try again with a different counsellor. All the best, Daniel Johnstone Service Manager Headstrong Counselling

Had counselling through Headstrong and had a really good experience, I had been matched to a counsellor after an assessment and I got on well with her. She really helped me develop my sense of self after trauma, and explored past trauma building on work that I had done with a previous therapist. Thoroughly recommend Headstrong and my counsellor (Caitlin Hope Counselling, who is based in London but also does online sessions). Although, note that she has left Headstrong after qualifying fully.

I have mixed feelings regarding my experience with Headstrong. While the sessions are affordable on a sliding scale based on earnings, I found that it was quite easy to tell that the counselor is in training. Indeed, I found my counselor to be quite nervous and uneasy which made some moment of the sessions a bit awkward. Additionally, I believe the payment system could be improved with direct withdrawals from accounts instead of a payment link sent.

Was very pleased with the counselling sessions, helped me a lot to review myself and learn to accept things from a different perspective.

I thoroughly benefitted from Headstrongs counselling. It was my first form of therapy and I really discovered a lot about myself. It was hard and I went through a lot of emotions, but overall it eased my anxiety and Jack was incredibly helpful.

Headstrong found a brilliant therapist for me who helped me greatly. They were quick and communicative and reasonably priced. I've recommended them to several people already.

I have found Headstrong to be professional and extremely helpful throughout my time as a client with them. From the initial assessment consultation to the weekly zoom calls, I have found the whole process to be easier and more helpful than I expected, and find myself returning to many of the techniques and improved thought processes worked on during the sessions. Thank you to everyone involved!

This was a super helpful service at a time when I needed it, the added benefit of it being both flexible and affordable meant that I could begin therapy much sooner than traditional methods of acquiring it. I would highly recommend headstrong for anyone looking for therapy as soon as possible and to easily fit it into your routine.

Really affordable, quality counselling. I would recommend this to anyone who needs extra mental health support but has limited financial means and cannot afford to wait for the NHS. They also adjusted their fee when I was facing unemployment. It was such an invaluable lifeline for me as I was navigating my mental health. So grateful.

Dear Headstrong, I came into therapy 10mths ago feeling overwhelmed & distraught with childhood trauma still effecting me into my adult life at 58. After developing a relationship with a therapist I have come to value & trust I have been able to unpack & process issues that kept me stuck. I have been able to take ownership of, change my life,  & begin to regain the wholeness, the integrity & the freedom i deserve. I am discovering with the support I need the person I really  am. An invaluable service I highly recommend. With gratitude Janie

Headstrong counselling has been a friend, confidant, safe space, and lifeline. With the option of being allowed to specify the gender, ethnicity and cultural preference of your therapist , I have been privileged to have met the most amazing individual who is helping me to find myself again. I am entering my first year of therapy and can truly say I have absolutely no regrets.

Solange worked with me over a couple of months and at first I was a bit resistant to engage. However, she showed me that I could absolutely help myself and helped me unpack some difficult feelings I didn’t necessarily realise I had. Although I’ve had some setbacks, I always remember the techniques Solange taught me and I’ll be forever grateful for her!

I think this is a good service for affordable counselling but I do think it would be necessary to try several counsellors out if you are not feeling you are clicking. I had a bad experience with my first one and did not want to continue on the service after only 3 sessions. During my first session my counsellor was video calling in from her car, which I believe was parked in the middle of a public car park. I could see several people walk by around the car through the windows. Her dog was also in the car and on the screen several times. I found it very distracting and found myself uncomfortable to openly talk about what I had come to therapy for. During the next 2 sessions I felt my counsellor was distracted and looking around her room on the camera, and I did not feel I was building any kind of rapport with her that would make me feel comfortable to open up. For my 4th call I waited on the video portal, emailing and calling several times to no answer. I waited around 30minutes into our session before I finally emailed to say I was giving up on calling her more and to let me know what happened. Hours later in the evening i received an email to say she had forgotten about our session, and I believe I was refunded for this session. After this I decided I was not interested in continuing with the counsellor and cancelled my contract to the service. Just to say that I rate this service, I’m glad it exists, I do feel I was just matched wrongly and the counsellor I was with was not right for me. But hopefully there are others who are better!

Good afternoon, Thank you for sharing your experience with our services here - your honest feedback will help us to improve our service for future clients, and to ensure we can continue to grow and provide the best possible support for those who need it. I'm grateful for your kind words about Headstrong itself and the work we do - however I'm sincerely so sorry to hear about the experience you had with your counsellor, who is no longer part of the organisation. This is unacceptable behaviour from a counsellor, in training or otherwise, and absolutely does not fit with the service and support that we pride ourselves on providing as an organisation. We provide training and guidance to all our counsellors on how to ensure they work from and create a safe and confidential space with their clients - your feedback will help us to improve this process and ensure this experience is not repeated. I completely appreciate if this experience has put you off trying again with our service, but If you would be willing to try our service again then we would gladly discuss this further with you to match you with a professional and effective counsellor - please email us at assessments@headstrongcounselling.co.uk if you would be interested in this. Whether you would like to try our services again or not, thank you again for your feedback here and our sincerest apologies for the negative experiences you've shared here. We hope to hear from you soon, if you would like to try again with a different counsellor. All the best, Daniel Johnstone Service Manager Headstrong Counselling

Poor. Was put through CBT without being told my options. Walked away disheartened by the experience.

Initially, I found my experience with Headstrong helpful and felt like I was making progress in dealing with my mental health and trauma. However, after almost three years, I have stopped my sessions because I now realise that my counsellor crossed some boundaries and our relationship became too personal. I also feel that I was manipulated into continuing my sessions on some occasions. This realisation came after talking to friends about their relationships with their therapists, who shared that their therapists would never say some of the things mine did on multiple occasions. This has made me feel extremely uncomfortable and somewhat exploited, and I now believe that the progress I thought I made over the last two years hasn't actually been made. Instead, I feel more conflicted and confused than before. Looking back, it seems like my sessions were more like gossip sessions rather than providing me with tools to navigate life and address my behaviours. These behaviours continued, often with encouragement from my counsellor. Although Headstrong is an affordable service, I do believe I made a poor decision in choosing my therapist. Due to this I don’t believe I will consider therapy again.

However I am deeply sorry to hear that your counsellor's behaviour left you feeling like you had been manipulated or exploited. This is absolutely unacceptable and not at all how a therapist should behave in any organisation or role, and is especially not in keeping with the service and care we pride ourselves on providing. While your counsellor is no longer a part of our organisation, your feedback highlights how important it is for us to make it easier for clients to speak up about negative experiences with their counsellor, and we will work hard to improve this aspect of our service and ensure that no client of ours is ever left feeling like they would not consider therapy again. I completely appreciate that you may not want to try again given the experience you've had over such a long period of time, but if you ever felt that it was the right time to return to therapy then we would gladly work with you to ensure that you were matched with the right counsellor and given the space to discuss any concerns you might have. If you would like to return at any point please email us at assessments@headstrongcounselling.co.uk. Whether you would like to try our services again or not, thank you again for your feedback here and our sincerest apologies for the negative experiences you've shared here. If we can help with anything at all, please get in touch. All the best, Daniel Johnstone Service Manager Headstrong Counselling
