“A lot cowboys, they do not check traders properly and some don’t have insurance when they say they do, the trader takes out insurance then cancels it within 14 days”

“I've never seen any worse like checkatrade and they only care to think how to take money from anyone I don't believe it. i sighed contract with checkatrade for 12 months and then i find full time i gave one month notice for cancellation my membership with in terms and conditions they said no”

“I have been a member of checkatrade for over 10 years now We have a very good reputation and do good quality work however we have now had 2 bad reviews that checkatrade do not check up on. Their review system is all backwards as long as their members pay their fees they dont care. I am so disappointed they care so little about us tradesmen and our customers even though i was promised that the complaints would be looked into and also my complaints nothing has been done”

“We used checkatrade to find a plumber to fit a bathroom for us we found the nearest one to us and he had a score of 9.8 at the time Coral Jewel Bathrooms the owner was Peter Beckwith. We hired him to do a basic bathroom for 3200.00 nightmare from start to finish but once moving you sometimes give someone benefit of the doubt. On second to last day we paid him the full remaining balance in cash, to keep this down he refused to come back to finish off plus the faults we had told him needing sorting out. Checkatrade phoned him he waffled on saying he would come back which he had no intention. We sent in the bad review with all the evidence but he ignored them after the 7 days they posted review and the same day the company was removed from checkatrade. I contacted them again as we decided to take him to court so I requested his address which they refused to give me saying it was data protection seems to me they are protecting the criminal. I paid to get his address and took him to court and won he didn't even bother to turn up hardly surprising. My problem here is checkatrade look after cowboy companies and the vetting is a waste of time. We found out he had been on checkatrade and the first job he did he ended up getting removed from checkatrade as the review was bad and the police were called. After 12 months you can go back and checkatrade then get a few fake reviews and that will push the bad one out of sight as is what happened here. Before we went to court I had my vehicle window smashed at night by this trader and police informed. Checkatrade are in it for the money and nothing else and today the advert on the radio is they guarantee all traders work for 12 months so what about the hundreds like us. Well we be in touch with you checkatrade and why don't you allow Google reviews for your company or is it that you are scared of the truth being written.”

“Would never use again . I choose a builder who was local and 10/10 only for him to be a complete and utter cowboy . I found out he had fake reviews from he's FB page where he's own girlfriend left him a glowing review , supplied the evidence to Check a trade and not heard anything since. Some one managed to leave him a bad review the other day where he had replied to them and basically justifying his shoddy work and now Check a trade have taken that review down . So now he is back to 10/10 again when he shouldn't be.”

“Don't bother tradesmen,since they've been taken over by homeserve they are useless...was with them for 7 years had 315 mostly 10/10 reviews then did a job for a customer from hell,the lying tw*t gave me a negative review because I walked off the job (she didn't stop moaning from the off) Sandra from checkatrade reviews team backed the liar 100%....save your hard earned money don't give it to checkatrade”

“Have been a trade customer of checkatrade since 2001 in early days was in 7/8 brochures so over the years have spent 10 of thousands pounds am now retiring contacted checkatrade said hanging up my tools, so after all my years off being a loyal customer they informed me got to carry on paying my fees till my Contract ends which is over £500. If you consider joining checkatrade at the end they will shaft you.”

“2nd experience with a shoddy trader off Checkatrade. Published review online for minimum number of stars - had to go to extensive lengths to prove the case as prior instance of poor Checkatrade was rejected as having insufficient proof. No refund, and software inexplicably ignored review in calculating the average review points, nor was it published as most recent review. It's important to know what checkatrade is & what it is not. It is a directory of traders who pay at least £100 per month to be listed. That is the business & those are the primary customers of the business. The reviews & end customer are secondary to that. In discussing with the agent they accepted the reality of phoney 10/10 reviews that are short & meaningless distorting the average ratings - often following blizzard like negative ratings that checkatrade accepts. Agent also noted the reality of the published pushback from traders when criticised was largely meaningless - they are the customers and allowed to publish in my case absurd pushback for shoddy service. Next time you use Checkatrade put the positive reviews to one side & note the negative, these are far more likely to be real than the positive reviews. Endless lists of 9.5* traders is not realistic - but a 7.5* average which people would normally accept makes you look like a basket case. So all the reviews need to be treated as the far less valuable currency than the site purports to set out. Don't be naive about what Checkatrade is - it is protect a trader who pays his subs first, it is Check a trader as a distant second. Caveat emptor.”

“hi tried to join checkatrade advised them on moving they could not verify me as my address was different ( i did tell l them about this on first call) 17 days later they asked me to send address on my bank mobile app then told me no good. 18 days wasted when they should have told me there system would tolerate a change of address. no stars”

“Peter Miles painter from Hilsea Portsmouth. Did a shoddy quick paint job on the outside of our property. Didn't like the fact he had to do a third coat on the new render and didn't even know it was to be applied on new render. So much for a professional. Was told it would take two days by the boss. Mr Miles did a quick paint job and even moaned when I asked for a third coat of paint. In was so angry that he did another coat under the supervision of my partner. All in all the work with all the hours where he kept vanishing on the job added upnto a days work . Charged 650 pounds with paint unfinished and on facia . Would never recommend this guy .”

“Having took the jump and becoming self employed in January 2021, I signed up for Checkatrade which had a 3 month trial period. Within this period, no calls came through and on investigation, it was discovered that when a customer clicked on my number on the website, it wasn’t being linked to my phone and hence no calls received. Checkatrade apologised and despite potentially losing £1000’s worth of work in that 3 months, they could only offer me another 3 months free trial and a chance to go in their physical directory (which turned out to be a complete waste of time). Once the glitch has been fixed, I began receiving calls which was great. Unknowingly however, this time it was the direct debit that weren’t working. Having gone unnoticed for 4 months, I received a call from checkatrade demanding I pay the £650 worth of unpaid invoices, and despite my challenge that this is the second time in only 6 months the platform has fooled me around, they were adamant that every single Penny had to be paid. This left a bitter taste in my mouth and so, I decided to leave the platform and the £650 I had to pay has lead me to once again return to full time employment (as I almost had to do within the first 3 months of being self employed - all because of their glitches and lack of attention). If I do decide to give self employed another crack, I will certainly not be signing up for checkatrade and will look at other directories who are a bit more personable to small, new business.”
