My 19 year old son had RAC black box insurance they cancelled giving us a days notice by letter, I phoned them up customer service shocking they said he had 3 red alerts which we hadn’t been notified by text phone nothing, they more or less said hard luck, ombudsman need to have a look at how they work, disgusting

My son has been insured with RAC black box for the past 9 months, recently his circumstances have changed due to work resulting in him driving more miles and therefore initially added a further 2000 miles to his policy. More recently, he firstly received an email informing him that his mileage will be automatically increased, followed by a second email stating his policy will be terminated. Speaking to RAC, they informed him that the underwriters we're not willing to insure him for over 10,000 miles, this I would understand if he had a poor black box record, however, his record is excellent and taking into account they had previously increased his milage we were left frustrated to say the least that RAC we're no longer willing to insure him. Maybe I've missed something, please show me in legislation where a young driver is only permitted to drive 10,000 miles because I'm struggling to find it! RAC did offer an alternative underwriter at a cost of approx. 2K, unrealistic and quite frankly insulting, there seems to be a desire to drain the youth of as much money as feasibly possible, almost preventing the young man getting to work! He is now moving his insurance, unfortunately at an increased cost, he was three months away from earning his first year of no claims, however, RAC have taken that away from him at our expense. I am disgusted that you also have the audacity to charge him £125 to cancel his policy, what exactly do we get for £125? I'm really struggling to understand what would warrant this expense and I doubt we are getting value for money, unless of course you can demonstrate that it takes one of your employees an entire day to cancel policies! RAC has wasted his opportunity to build up his no claims by failing to account and accommodate peoples changes in circumstances, you should be ashamed of your rather poor service given the incredible cost in the first instance.

Seeing alot of negative comments here, but as a first year driver I found this policy to be decent (as far as having a black box can go.) Having a black box isn't ideal and don't get me wrong, the scoring on it was sometimes a nightmare, you get marked down for speed if you go even 1mph over the speed limit, and you get marked down for your urban score quite easily, I found even due to slowing down for speed bumps. However, overall the scoring system is quite lenient and it isn't hard to drive carefully. My driver scores were usually around 90/100 every week over the year. There is no night curfew and when i did drive at night the night score didn't really go down too much anyway so that wasn't a problem. If you change up gears rather than accellerating from 2nd to 4th for example, and break slowly, you'll find yourself comfortably within a safe score. I question the people on here who are on low scores- How badly are you driving? However come renewal they didn't really offer anywhere near the most competitive price, so I wouldn't use this insurance with the sole focus being getting good scores for a cheaper renewal- Use price comparison sites as I saved about 200£ and got rid of my black box compared with staying with RAC. One complaint is that they won't remove the black box and told me to get it taken out next MOT, so I'm stuck with a box in the car using up battery. If they detect faults with your car they seem to love calling you from a call centre in manchester, I kept getting errors on the black box saying I had an emissions problem. They called saying it could cause the engine to break. I got this checked with mechanic and they said it was all fine. Overall I can't really complain. -If you get a black box car policy don't expect to be able to drive around accelerating rapidly and going over the speed limit. Its a black box for a reason. - Look around for renewal quotes as even though they say they take your scores in consideration, I got scores of mostly 85-95 all year and their renewal quote was more expensive by about £200 -Have no experience on making a claim or cancelling so cannot personally comment on that.

The cover is great for a new driver and has a black box with free Installation which is good. However, if you have the black box I had several occasions where my score drops severely for no reason meaning they do tamper with data if you dont keep an eye on it but all in all it is good

Customer service almost non existent. Wrote two emails concerning my NCB but only got standard replies back after three or four days. No one actually answered my queries in my emails. Eventually cancelled my policy within the 14 day period. It cost me around £30 but found a better deal with Churchill. Still waiting for my refund which doesn't surprise me. Will never bother with the RAC again.

If you are on the fence as a new driver, on whether to take RAC I strongly advise you read this. Price-wise it seemed good, for a first year driver. Didn't mind having a black box fitted etc. Now 10 months in, my policy has been cancelled (I paid this upfront so I have essentially lost my last 2 months worth, as well as my NCB and now having to declare the cancellation to new quotes). In an ongoing dispute with them over this but it has left myself, a key worker in a nightmare position. I am now out of pocket indefinitely and forced to find a new policy urgently. Basically the box triggered "red-alerts" three times due to low scoring and RAC/underwriters failed to communicate with me on all occasions, first I was made aware of this was coming home to a letter at the end of the week stating it has been cancelled (with no reason stated). Through escalation I keep being told they cannot do anything over it. If they manage to give me a good resolution I will of course update this review but I am sceptical so far. I raised my concerns 6 months ago, about the accuracy and validity of the black box but the response went radio silent. If you have read this far, please for the love of god suck up the extra couple hundred £'s at the outset and avoid these like the plague. This will protect your insurance and NCB in your future years.

Customer service is poor. I was told the wrong information on a series of phone calls after an accident. Additional money was removed from my account which was EVENTUALLY refunded. I was told more than once, by more than one person, that I had already been refunded £25, part of the amount I was contesting. No I hadn't. The rest (£40) shouldn't have been charged in the first place. I'd been told after adjusting my policy, that I'd actually be due a bit of a refund! I was offered £10 compensation. I was told that they wouldn't check all the recorded phone calls as I requested. I was told that staff training wouldn't be changed to reflect my complaint. Only the last person I'd spoken to would alerted to any mistakes made. Even though others had given me wrong information too. They don't seem to be interested in improving their customer service at all. Won't be renewing with them.

Very very bad decision to purchase insurance from RAC. Don’t know the outcome of my claim or even if it’s really being considered. They send you to a company called CSAL who are not interested in communication. Several months in and no response to any attempt to find out what (if anything) is happening. My advice would be to deal with an actual insurance company who have an interest in looking after customers for repeat business. Sadly RAC don’t appear to fall into this category. Avoid avoid avoid.

Tried to change my insurance when I changed my car from a bmw 4 series to a 5 series. Told could not insure a 5 series, and as my policy had to be cancelled I was charged a £50 cancellation fee. Not my fault, not exactly a supercar but I must pay £50!!!!

Setting up the direct debit and choosing your coverage was pretty straightforward, however as soon as you confirm your payment that's when the customer service quality disappears. No further communication, no access to policy documents, website malfunctioning etc.

I cancelled the policy within the cooling off period because they were very dictatorial in their communications. They told me I had to have a black box which would monitor all my driving and parking, and where I was visiting etc. I was told my no claims was incorrect and I was lying on my application. There was an error from my previous insurance companies which I contacted and sorted out. I decided I did not want to be insured by the RAC so I changed my insurance company.

AVOID like the plague or COVID 19 if you can. Black box interfered with the Merc on board computer of my car and caused it to go into limp mode. Car would not accelerate above 40mph - causing many dangerous instances. Merc charged me £45 everytime they needed to remove this black box to access the OBD port which is usually free. Finally got the black box moved using a RAC engineer to the batter - only to receive email from RAC that my policy is cancelled as the black box is now not working. AVOID AVOID AVOID. RAC shoould not be fiddling with customers cars.... you will spend more in the long term and SUFFER for no fault of yours. SHAME ON YOU RAC

Just obtained an online quote from RAC for car insurance. Quoted over four times as much as other top 5-star defacto rated insurance companies. Obviously I will not be taking out a policy with RAC and it's likely I will obtain future quotes.

The black box fitted to my car ruined my ECU and the wiring loom (brand new car) taken then vehicle back to the dealership who told me that this would not be covered under warranty as it had been caused by the faulty fitting off the box. I phoned RAC and received very slow response, I was told that It would take up to 8’weeks for this to be resolved and in the meantime I was left without a car and unable to go to work.
