Call out when my car failed to start on Holiday, took 3 hours to arrive and charged me £110.99 for a new battery after fully checking all car electrics. Next day drove my son to alton towers and on way back electric seemed to go dead. Pulled over at 22:30 in dark and popped bonnet expecting to have to tighten the connection. Battery was on fire. Grabbed my son and ran down hard shoulder. Car went up in fireball 5 mins later. Closed the M6 with 4 fire engines to put it out. Car was a right-off and RAC denied all responsibility. Also Insurance Co. could not confirm cause due to the severity of the damage to the engine bay. RAC getting away scott free. On complaining they simply refunded the battery cost as a goodwill gesture and declined any legal responsibility. The car was a 2010 Mazda 6 with regular servicing in immaculate condition. Given I saw the battery on fire and nothing else, and the car had been checked by their engineers the day before and given the all-clear before they then fitted the battery, I will let you decide what you think to the cause but I dont believe in that level of coincidence and will never use them again. It's a shame you have to enter at least one star to submit a review. ** STAY CLEAR IF YOU VALUE YOUR LIFE *** -- Reply to Hannah--- Thank you for the reply however it remains that either :- 1) The RAC Engineer missed something life threatening wrong with the car during his extensive testing, Or 2) The battery fitted by the RAC engineer was done poorly, Or 3) The battery itself was faulty. In all 3 scenarios the RAC are in my mind at fault, either by incompetence or supply of faulty goods. Also at the time of logging the call no mention was made by RAC indicating they were in any way checking other batteries in the same batch to prevent any further occurrence of this - Be wary if they fit (or have fitted) a type '003' battery to your vehicle! When I rang to cancel the policy with the same person who had already been dealing with my complaint he even had the cheek to ask 'Why?' ... honestly you cannot make this up

disgusting and disgraceful service last night 23 nov 2016 , i had the misfortune to breakdown and forced to call the rac whom we have been with since the year 1982 . i rang up the breakdown line at 7pm, it wasnt until 9.15pm that they eventually sent out a (local mechanic) to come and look at my vehicle, i was told on the telephone by the telephone operative i wasnt to worry they are mechanics . anyway the driver from burrows attended and he greeted me, and did nothing more than shine a torch under my van and say "have to tow you mate" so he proceeded to ask me to back my van upto his tow truck as he would have to tow me with my backend off the floor incase the brakes locked up . he then towed me where i wanted togo which was a friends house . He dropped off my vehicle and went on his way . I had a sleepless night, thinking over and over how the rac boast about fixing 4 out of 5 cars / vehicles by the roadside . so i rang customer services at 6am this morning the 24th nov 2016 . and i proceeded to tell my story about the local agent and that i felt he didnt investigate my issues fully all he written on his notes was "brakes" ?? and that could they please send a real racman out to me with a computer etc etc to properly access my vehicle . this they agreed too and this morning they attended , the rac driver proceeded to actually drive my vehicle with me as the passenger and witness goings on with the vehicle, he plugged in his computer and said there was no faults coming up, and best thing for us todo is get it to a garage for repair so he would take me to a rac approved garage 4 miles away called trs (near ilkeston) .. to my horror he said "follow me" and he had me drive my vehicle despite me being towed the previous night as not to dammage my vehicle ( i presume) anyway i drove my vehicle 4 miles follwing the rac man and all the way i could sense something was happening and wasnt right , but as he was the professional i didnt question once what i was being asked todo was anything wrong we arrive at trs, he seems to know the woman behind the desk very well, they have a small joke between themselves as she asked him if he had sent a report through yet or just hasnt bothered as usual . He told her what he thought was wrong with the vehicle which was a faulty abs sensor , and nothing more . i was then led outside to a fiat 500 car to take home and i would receive a phonecall from the garage to let me know there findings . Around 2pm trs ring me to say that my vehicle has a totally collapsed rear wheel bearing and it looks to have taken out the abs sensor and the cost to have this fixed would be £277 . too be honest the bill surprised me aswell as shocked me, and i got to thinking "how on earth did the rac man miss the issue, and why did he had me drive 4 + something miles to a garage when i have been recovered the previous night purposely with my rear wheels lifted off the floor .. so in effect i feel that due to being made to drive my vehicle to the garage it has damaged my vehicle further resulting in the bill i am going to receive for rectification works to my vehicle . So i decided to ring rac customer service to tell them of my story and issues of the last 24 hours i spoke to a Miss Kitching , who was very unhelpful and actually rude and aloof towards me, and just stuck up for the driver and his actions , but she would forward a complaint to the correct department , despite telling me she was the customer service executive ... i asked to speak to someone higher and whom it was and she said Miss Parker isnt here today she is ill, and i wont be forwarding you even if she wasnt . And that i am to now ask the garage for a report of my vehicle, and if the garage what to charge me to write a report then i must pay that cost . All this i found further disgraceful , especially as we have been lifelong members of the rac and its services . She left the phone call saying i would get a email and i would have to send the report to her and she may look into it . i thanked her for her time and we both left the conversation .. so now i wait to collect my vehicle and pay the near on £300 . which is appalling considering what ive been through at the hands of rac and its professional workforce . And having been with them since 1982 some 34 years :( appalled doesnt come into it ..

I have never been treated so badly by any company I have had dealings with. The staff are rude. I cancelled my home insurance policy to go with another company as the RAC quote was quite ridiculous. Weeks later I received a phone call telling me I was in arrears with my payments. I telephoned again (at a premium rate) I was passed from incompetent person to incompetent person until I was finally told they had no record of my cancelling. They said this would be rectified and that would be fine. Again some weeks later I received quite a bullying letter saying I was still in arrears and my case would be passed to debt collectors. I again telephoned (at no small cost) only to be told I had never cancelled. I had to provide proof that I had other insurance which I did and I was told someone would ring be back later that day. No one did. Again I received another letter, now telling me they had cancelled my policy but that I had fees to pay or they would again send my debt to a recovery department. I WOULD NOT recommend anyone to get insurance from this company.

Don't bother with them, nothing but stress. Thought I get car insurance as I was already had rac cover, once bought policy had numerous emails saying can't open email and last email rac sent was to cancel insurance. Law and behold I rang them again they confirmed That I had three years of no claims bonus I will never renew insurance just stick to breakdown cover not worth the stress.

In May we broke down on the way to a family camping holiday. We had two under 2 in the car and it was the hottest day of the year. It took well over two hours for anyone to get to us, and when someone arrived it was not an RAC engineer but a partner. The partner didn't even pop the bonnet of our car, he just said "oh I get a lot of Peugeots" then loaded us on to tow us away. The guy was rude, slow and unhelpful. He spent a full 5 minutes enjoying his Costa Coffee in his vehicle before coming out of his car, despite the fact that I was holding a screaming 6 month old baby! My complaints experience with this issue has infuriated me further. Initially I wrote to offer feedback on the partner and to suggest that there may be other more suitable partners to team up with. Every correspondence with RAC has completely missed the point that the reason I was not happy was because I have had no apology for the fact that they took so long worth two young babies in the car on the hottest day of the year, and no acknowledgement that, perhaps, their partner was not good enough to deal with a break down, as I suspect that he was a tow truck driver and not a mechanic. I've cancelled my membership and will never join again.

We had a payment for renewal to our credit card, we were not aware this was coming out, no idea of the price of another year. The price was actually too high, so we rang to cancel and were told they would be happy to cancel, but they were going to keep all the money, no refund would be given. we have had 4 weeks cover with no claims. what a bunch of crooks. Beware you may sign for automatic renewal and get ripped off. Our advice is go somewhere else for your breakdown cover.

The insurance service is appalling. if you wish to buy a different car they charge you a whopping £54 fee just. Its a way of inserting higher fees and making their insurance look cheaper. Its utter robbery, and when I asked speak to a supervisor to discuss it no one was avalable, then this woman rang me back and just kept arguing and arguing she would not even listen to my point of view. utter bastards...

38 years member - very poor call-out service. Every year the cost of membership keeps rising, without any call outs and no long term Loyalty discount being offered to old customers of 38 years. Unfortunately, recently, I need this call out service, and this particular RAC breakdown man, lacked in knowledge after not be able to find the scanner plug, despite being pointed out to him, and he was unable to fix the vehicle and bombarded us with so called temperature readings and said this vehicle would never start up again, and he called out Westbourne Garage to attend as non-urgent stating 90 minutes waiting time. Westbourne mechanic informed us there was no fuel being pumped, despite having half a tank of diesel. 38 years of Membership being flushed down the toilet. Thank you RAC I will be looking for an alternative breakdown/recovery provider. Disgruntled RAC member of 38 years of Loyal Membership. We would suggest your RAC mechanics need better training. Reluctantly Goodbye.

In January. I informed them of a object falling of a lorry and hitting my bumper. After inspecting the damage. The third party agreed to pay. I never made a claim. When insurance was due for renewal. The price went from £300+ to £2700+.? I did not renew. I requested proof of my no claims. They sent A letter with proof of 7 years. But still had me down as a claim in January. After several phone calls and many hours on the phone. 4 Weeks later. Still not resolved. I asked to be put through to complaints. Got fobbed off. I would not recomend you use this company.
