4/18/21: Ordered a dress, received as promised
4/23/21: Returned item at my expense via FedEx as dress very heavy & did not fit properly. I paid for the postage & did not utilize their postage fees.
6/07/21: Called J. Peterman as never received acknowledgment of the return or credit to my credit card.
6/08/21: Received email notifying me of credit which was less than I tendered to them originally. Phoned again & after lengthy delay, was informed a $8.95 "restocking fee" was substracted from the total.
I rechecked the website, the order form, & their catalog & I could not find anywhere that mentioned a "restocking fee".
Honestly, I do not believe I would have received any amount of refund, if I had not called them. There was sufficient time, after they received the return item, to credit my credit card and the unknown "restocking fee" was a real irritation & frankly, unacceptable.
I do not know what has happened to this company! The items I ordered from them in the 80's & early 90's were high quality and very unique, accompanied by outstanding customer service. I was unaware they were still in existence until I was searching the Internet for a spring dress & stumbled upon them. Initially, I was thrilled; not so anymore. I am done & it appears J. Peterman is as well.”
“I used to be a frequent customer & still receive the catalog but every time I check reviews the bad business habits & shoddy financial picture doesn’t change .
My question is why does Peterman still exist unless it’s to earn interest off extremely delayed refunds.”
“I am so disappointed with them- Petermans used to be great quality and customer service. I bought the seat sucker suit - wrong size and really cheaply made and took it to fedex the same day to return. Three weeks passed no refund contacted customer service they had no record of the return so I had to find my receipt gave them the number (btw I tracked the number it had been signed for and received the next day) - received an email yhee we next day the suit had been found and a ticket was issued- and stated the process would take 4 to 6 weeks for a refund. What a sham I’ll never shop with them agsin”
“Total scam company, order a jacket in March 27th, the i was emailed the following
"Unfortunately, due to unexpected customer demand for this item, our inventory was depleted prior to your order being processed and there is no listed restock date."
I requested to be refunded, but then was told it would take 3 weeks, as of May 18th NO REFUND
Do NOT purchase from this company!!!”
“Ordered two items that were "in stock" at the beginning of February. Turns out one item was back-ordered. I received the other but sent it back to exchange for a different size that was in stock. After one month of waiting, I emailed them. Clearly my exchange slip had been lost, and I was informed that the size I wanted was out of stock, even though it had been in stock when I sent the item back for exchange. I was promised a refund within 7-10 business days and that my refund was marked "high priority." 17 business days later and no refund. This company and its business practices are disgusting and shameful.”
“This company is a Seinfeld episode. Bought a few shirts. Returned 3 that didn't fit properly. Value of returns $225. Here's the timeline:
January 30, 2021 --Shipped back to them
February 3, 2021 --Delivery to Peterman confirmed by FedEx
March 31, 2021 --Called Peterman. Rep confirmed merchandise was received. Said he would process credit. May take 5 days for it to be credited to my card.
April 8, 2021 --Still no credit posted to my card. Called Peterman. Rep confirmed a request to process credit was made, but may take up to 12 days.
In the most recent call I also cancelled a pair of moccasins that were on backorder since mid-January. Let's see if they get this right.”
“I have the same situation as everyone else. I ordered a pair of shorts that were "in-stock," but never actually shipped. I called them to ask about it, and it would seem that they were actually "out of stock," yet I still had to call them to issue a refund. Why it is that they would charge you for something before it has even shipped is beyond me, but I still haven't seen that refund. I suppose, as everyone else has stated, I should probably call them soon to remind them about it. I would highly suggest finding another retailer to order from.”
“Horrible ! Been a customer for 25 years...returned two sweaters over two months ago and despite 6 phone calls, nothing. They keep saying the amount will be credited to the card on file...do not buy from this company!”
“Like many others, I waited weeks for a confirmation email that the order I placed had shipped. I was never notified that the product I ordered was never in inventory and was told that I would have to wait several more weeks on the "expectation" that it "might" be available after I finally received a response from them. I've worked for retailers in the past that have gone bankrupt and this is a sure sign that this company is about to go under. A great shame for what once was one of my favorite retailers. Do NOT buy from them.”

“I have been a faithful loyal customer, owning just about every Caftan ever offered. I was so happy to see the caftans back after a year. I purchased 2. Only one came. They told me the other was out of stock only after several emails to them. I have talked, chatted, emailed to 6 different people about REFUND, everyone has told me something different and I’m still waiting.
Since I lost my business with the covid crisis, I can’t afford to have money floating around. It just seems they don’t want to give me my refund! They have lost a great customer, along with my friends. We have probably bought 500 caftans together.”
“AVOID THIS PLACE it is a SCAM. It appears they are going out of business (or bankrupt AGAIN) and don't have enough money to send orders or refund customers. We call OVER AND OVER AND OVER and are told "You'll be paid tomorrow" or "The system is down." For months? Bull. DO NOT ORDER FROM THIS COMPANY!!!! All moneys sent to them appear to be nonrefundable donations.”
“Same scenario as many of these other customers...I ordered 2 t-shirts on January 25, 2021. I received a confirmation email for this order and didn’t hear another thing so I called mid February to inquire and was told the shirts were no longer available. Refund, please. Will take two weeks to issue. I have called twice since and gotten a run around, including fawning, insincere apologies and lies about when the refund will be issued. I was promised yesterday I would get a refund today. Hadn’t happened and the business day is almost over. Just terrible customer service. Never again.”
“Purchase originally made on October 22, 2020 and sent back to them the same week was finally refunded on February 26, 2021. A restocking fee of $9 was deducted from my full return credit as well. Completely unacceptable. Will not do business with this company in the future.”

“It's taken me TWO months to get a refund. Like most, I don't write reviews. I try to take them with a grain of salt knowing it's usually frustrated customers and situations can happen. However, the one-star rating for this company is generous.
I'd recommend for this company to replace Tammie. She had ZERO sympathy, never apologized, basically told me SOL "we're 6 weeks behind on refunds". I have been chasing this for months and have names, proof, etc. She could not bother to care since it was taken care of while we're on the phone. Only after me being transferred 3x once again. Jody and Pia, also lied about the refund being proceeded weeks prior and should be held accountable for lying.
I can appreciate some situations are out of employees' hands, but keeping people's money for months during a pandemic? You might think of replacing your associates if they're burnt out. It's showing.”
“I ordered a pair of pants, I never heard another word but they we sure to charge me. I sent an email they said they were out of stock and would not be get them in and they would credit me. Got my credit card statement, no refund only a charge. Sent another email and 2 days later get an answer saying they sent my card a credit. I'll believe it when I see it. I had the same problem last year with guide boat and currently have been waiting for a pair of pants from Territory Ahead for 6 months, they don't answer my emails any more. I found out all 3 companies are all the same owners.”
“Ordered two items for Xmas 2020. The items concerned were of poor quality and I returned them on 12/30/20. Fed Ex delivered them to J Peterman on Jan 4th, 2021. Still no refund. This is the second time this has happened to me with Peterman (more fool me, right?). They used to be a good company selling quality merchandise. Not any more. It's too bad.”
“Ordered a blouse for my wife for Christmas with 2 weeks lead time with expedited shipping. Checked with them second week in January to see where it was. Was notified that it was out of stock when I ordered it. (“Weren’t you going to tell me?”) They gave me the option of waiting for it to be restocked in an indefinite period of time or getting a refund. I opted for the refund, which I was told could take a couple of weeks because they were “running behind and had to do inventory”. Wrote to them last week to check on what the delay was. No response yet. I’ll call tomorrow. Such a shame. Used to be a good, reliable vendor.”
