What went wrong was the question this site asked when I hit 1 star and the answer is simple - everything! They are horrific, not chat feature other than a chat bot which cannot answer even the most basic of questions, online banking does not recognise account, no email available for mortgages, the others dept with an email refuse to help or even supply the right email, my mortgage experience was so bad i think it may have even been fraudulent, with legal letter to me stating incorrect information and no refund after they took too much money. Read the reviews, they are bang on! Awful, terrible, living in the past, horrific, poor service, etc etc

They stopped account after I took power of attorney on my cousins money x I attempted to take some cash out for something and they stopped account. They stopped all direct debits in and out. Now his rent is not going to be paid or food. They have literally stolen £20 000

Terrible customer service, abysmal. Not providing sufficient information requiring me to call my insurance company over and over again for documents that were needed. I highly suggest staying away from Santander.

Absolutely awful bank - completely disjointed, intrusive, inefficient, and appalling quality of service: 1) they blocked my account once 2 years ago, preventing my Paypal direct debits from going through causing me bigf issues. When I called them, they said that it was PayPal's fault - after workign through it with PayPal it was clear it was nothing to do with them. It took me insisting to an agent at Santander that they were the ones blocking the account for her to finally uncover a note on the account saying they wanted additional documents from me to continue operating the account - they never sent me any communicaiton to let me know this was the case, they just blocked my account! 2) I live abroad and earn my income abroad, pay taxes abroad. And I have rarely sent money back into the UK. And certainly nothing to Santander. Yet they continuously pester me to find out what my net worth is and how much money I have in my foreign bank accounts. I understand if I send money into my UK account they need proof of funds, but this level of intrusion when I have not remitted money into Santander is beyond intrusive and not justifiable 3) I have a mortgage through them - but their departments do nto talk to each other - so if I need to update a mailing address, I need to update each department separately. When they do annual account checks - they ask me questions and for documentation on the rental income from my property and on my mortgage - even though they are the ones administering the property mortgage and have all this information. 4) I tried to make payments to buy goods from Amazon - hardly a small dodgy retailer - using my debit card. I tried both to verify the transaction by using the app and by using an OTP and after confirming them each time, Santander then rejected the transactions for no reason (there were plenty of funds int he account). I tried to resolve but in the end gave up and just used another account... They really are truly appalling with zero care for the inconvenience they cause or the lack of minimal service they provide...

Santander has proven itself to be one of the most disappointing and unreliable banks out there. For the third time, they’ve blocked my account simply because I engaged in a few small crypto trades and made transactions via TransferWise. This isn’t just inconvenient; it’s outright insulting. I work hard, pay my taxes, and follow the rules—yet, instead of being treated with respect, Santander treats me as if I’m a criminal. It’s unacceptable to block access to my own hard-earned money and then demand unnecessary statements to “verify” transactions. Because of these arbitrary freezes, I’m now facing extra charges on my car insurance and other important payments. Santander’s excessive and unwarranted scrutiny punishes loyal customers, pushing them to the brink by questioning every minor financial move. Santander needs to reassess its approach. Blocking customers’ funds and disrupting their lives over minor transactions is not customer care—it’s customer punishment. This bank has turned banking into a nightmare, and it’s high time they acknowledge and address their unreasonably aggressive practices.

Change of mandate for a business account. A nightmare process. Still not approved after 10 months! Documents lost; inconsistency in advice; giving me the wrong name; taking a complaint from one of their business advisors on my behalf!!; having spoken to 4 or 5 business advisors today told they can’t discuss the account with me despite the fact I’m a Director of the company and have sent 3 change of mandate forms and 3 copies of my ID! Branch lost paperwork which was meant to have been faxed to the business team! And the mess continues!! Do they read these reviews? I doubt it

When we were going through them for our car loan, they kept towing our cars. We were making payments every month on the loan, yet our cars kept getting repossessed. They applied money to the wrong vehicle more than once, then proceeded to lie to us. This is the worst company ever to go through for loans!

I had a fraud case and Santander ruled in favor of those who committed the fraud, they did an investigation into a fake check and NEVER notified me of the decision, they canceled all my accounts and blocked them and I had no access to them, they did not notify me either, and to top it off I called to make a payment plan to pay off my credit card and they DENIED payment by installment, they did not look for a solution to my problem, SANTANDER DOES NOT WORK, IT HAS BEEN THE WORST EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE, THIEVES.

I have been using Santander Bank for 12 years and in the last year they have been very disappointing. When I deposit money into the bank and keep it there, the bank is happy. But when the scammers took a large amount from my account, the bank did not want to do anything to help me get my money back. Although I contacted them several times, the bank refused to help me, because in their opinion the circumstances were not suitable. And when the circumstances changed, the bank said that the complaint period had already expired 😂 👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎🤣

Absolutely shocking customer service , took 5 weeks to setup a joint account and my sister still doesn’t have her card . Bounced around call centre muppets who seem unable to assist . Even the complaints department don’t call you back or chase up . Avoid like the plague .

Some time ago, I had Open Bank block my account there because suspicious debits were being attempted. A week after the account was blocked, Open Bank still allowed a large debit to go through from a fraudulent company. Unfortunately, there has been no compensation or apology to date. Never again open or Santander!

I wish I had not come across this company when I did, everything I did with the company was just a total waste of time, I’d have said a total waste of resources also but oliviatrader 44 at gmail . Com made sure I got my money back. They are just a bunch of thieves who have had scamming in their DNA, that is what they were born to do and I hope someday justice will be served and they will be made to face the law. They seem to want to have less customers. Made an appt. Showed up on time. No one came out for 15-17 minutes. Then the woman never apologized for being late (she was in the back the whole time). They don’t do bills delivered to pay automatically. They just talk down to you the whole time. I’m guessing their plan is for everyone to leave the bank so they don’t have to work? I don’t get why or how you can be THIs bad about customer service and this entitled towards customers. Very snooty entitled people at this bank who really hate working there and really don’t seem to want customers at all.

3 months ago Santander froze my account and they say are not at liberty to tell me why. The customer service is truly appalling, I have phoned several times and generally you are passed around from one person to another for up to 3 hours (that is my personal record) I have filed a complaint with the financial ombudsman but that takes time and meanwhile does not help with access to my money. I am truly shocked that banks are allowed to do this to their customers. It gives you little faith in financial institutions!
