The Sea Cleaners Kit linked in so well with our term topic of Kaitiakitanga. The tamariki embraced to idea of becoming guardians of our local environment. We began by looking at how we care for our class, our school and then our community. The rubbish audit drew our attention to what kinds of waste we create in our class. The enthusiasm shown during our riverside clean-up was fantastic. At the end, it was difficult to get the children to leave and return to school. There was surprise at how many small pieces of plastic were along the river bank. During the term, we read many quality picture books about being kaitiaki and these stories led to quality discussions about our practices.
