(ZERO STARS) Rip-off - Avoid at all costs - car insurance premium increased 38% by auto-renewal My RAC black box car insurance premium were £420+ annually for the first two years, however I was charged £584 during this year's renewal (38% increase!) This was renewed automatically and charged to my credit card. They claimed to have sent a renewal notice by post, but unfortunately I have moved addresses and did not receive this. It is year 2022 and they are still expecting their customers to read all their physical mails, despite having my email address and mobile number registered to my account. If I were to cancel the insurance, I'd incur a £125 cancellation fee - effectively holding me ransom! Nonetheless, having called their customer service to enquire the basis of the premium increase (the car only ran less than 2000 miles the past year and was without any claim/incident) - they were not able to justify the reason for the increase in premiums (official reason: premium was quoted by the companies they use). I have used a price comparison website at this point and the same RAC policy is being offered to me at £440 (with a few competitors offering similar pricing). I have logged a formal complaint and have been told a formal response will take 4 weeks. In the meantime I will also log a similar complaint to Financial Ombudsman Service and other review forums to warn the public. Despite what is advertised, avoid this company at all costs, it’s just not worth it! Just look at the other reviews on this page..

In April a friend of mine borrowed my car and broke down. A truck came with only room for one passenger even though they were told there were 3. Promised a taxi would come for the two passengers. It never did. By this time it was late, cold and wet so they ordered and paid £150 for taxi. Despite contacting RAC on numerous occasions i am still waiting for the money! 4 months on! Next step is the CEO and then the Ombudsman. I will never recommend them. I will also add that the recovery truck driver was very rude and said when my friend was worried about leaving passengers stranded, if he didn't get in cab he would unload car and leave.!

Involved in a collision not my fault. On that morning my whole world tipped and RAC left me high and dry. Refer you to a claims management company, you are given no details. No contact from anyone for 3 weeks, then they email an offer £1000 less than it will cost me to buy the same car even from a private sale. The worst experience of my life. I insured with a name I had confidence in, after an accident not my fault I’ve have to take a loan to buy the same car because the shocking claim managers are so bad. Heard not a thing for 3 weeks until I finally managed to contact them. I appealed, they offered an extra £70. I asked when they’ll pay out and told it can be up to 3 months. So I’ll have to take a loan to pay to replace a vehicle taken from me by a third party and RAC do absolutely nothing. If you look on their website there is no contact for insurance claims only for breakdowns. Never will use or recommend. Worst experience of my life dealing with this company. Give them the widest berth you can and check the claims handling company too, they work with a few insurance companies with a trust pilot score of 1. I’d give RAC and their claim management company zero stars.

The worst recovery people ever. We called them at 8pm someone came at 11:30pm and told us our vehicle was fine and that we could drive off when clearly it was dangerous as there was a red warning light. After he left us 10 minutes later the car broke down again and we called them and they said someone will be with us in 2 hours. After a rude lady called saying no one can pick us up till 7am or we can have a taxi and leave our car on the side of the road at our own risk when our car is a business one. She then went on to say why were we travelling in the heat and that its our problem and she said if we shout at her she would end the call. After i was trying to ask why someone would let us drive when our car is not fit for purpose and that this is negligent as they owe a higher standard of care and she was saying no you listen to me and was not letting me speak and then she said shes not having this and that she is ending the call. We then had to sleep on the motorway till 8 am someone came to pick us up and dropped us off 30 miles and said someone will take us from there and are on their way. We called them and asked where the pickup truck is after an hour and they had not sorted it out. They also said they'll take us to hire a car and that they'd have to find a car. We then had to hire a private truck as these people were useless. Overall we were on the road for 15-16 hours as they could not sort anything out for us. Absolutely ridiculous never use these people as they would leave you to die. One of the passengers has medical conditions and they said call emergency services. 0 stars disgusting service.

Took out car insurance last July for my wife’s Fiesta and was happy to pay£163 fully comprehensive. Renewal came in looking for £266 I spoke to an advisor regarding the increase and was advised that this was what they were quoted by the companies they use Please be be very careful if you use the automatic renewal option given a rise of this size with no change in circumstances

Cancelled my policy today as the vehicle was sold. The insurance started Dec 21 and runs to Nov 22, the policy cost was £148.77, and I have 'used' £88.65 so the refund should be £60.12p . BUT no, there is a £55 cancellation charge, yes £55 !!!!!!. What a rip off, will not be using them again, they might win this one but loose out in the long term. Phil Allen

Dreadful ‘service’ by RAC- told me my premium was going up due to an ‘undisclosed claim’ I gave proof from the previous insurers that I simply rang to see if a scratch I had received at a supermarket was claimable and then decided against claim due to the excess. Apparently however they still won’t reduce my premium back to previous amount as I had made the enquiry!! Unbelievable!

Car insured was stolen so insurance eventually paid out therefore Insurance policy was cancelled as I no longer had that car or any other car. RAC threatened me with legal action if I don’t £1600 for cancelling the policy !

Terrible experience with RAC. Firstly the price was quite high but I stupidly assumed that meant the service was going to be good. I had an incident in Nov 2021 whereby something dropped from a bridge and hit my windscreen as well as the plastic strip at the bottom of the windscreen. I reported it and then never heard back about repairs. Due to ill health I didn’t chase it until now (June 2022). I spent nearly 5 hours speaking with rac and their underwriter company and in short they had forgotten to even log the claim on their system. To make matters worse they wanted me to pay a voluntary excess plus the usual excess which came to £550!! For a windscreen and a bit of plastic! Not even worth claiming. Really wished I had of checked here first! Have cancelled my policy and will never use again

Sold my car, therefore, I had to cancel my Insurance policy which I'd had for just over six months. I had to pay £55.00 administration charge, this left me with refund of £33.49 I was told I will have to wait 10 days for this to be credited back to me.

I have been with RAC insurance for only a year. Shame they were not able to beat the prices of the company that I went for this year. But, for someone who depends so much on online portals like me, their portal is straightforward and easy to use. Everything is there ( documents, NCB etc). I would recommend this company without a doubt!

Having multiple policies I find the admin fees they apply to existing customers who reduce the number of policies with them if they sell one of their car excessive. £50 cancellation fee to call in the cancellation to hit a few buttons! You can't even amend the policy yourself on the portal to save the customer service person element so no way to avoid the admin fee. I've recently added my daughter less than 2 weeks before the cancellation so charged £25 for that and now another £50. If you still remain a customer on other policies you would think they would introduce some sort of loyalty element.... I know who I won't be renewing with next time round.

Very poor. Watch out for their auto renewal. They opt you in and if you don’t tell them otherwise they will auto renew and then text you afterwards to say they have renewed. They then charge you £25 admin fee to cancel. It’s a massive scam. If are happy to auto renew you’re mad as they doubled my premium from £75 to £150! Will never use again.

Apart from the fact it takes an age to make contact via phone when ever you ring, I contacted them to cancel my policy as I was changing my car they informed me a charge of £48 pounds would be charged. I must add the person i dealt with did in the end waver the charge.

Renewal price was upped by £100 pa - from approx £185 to £285. Been with them for a few years so loyalty means nothing. Bye bye. I'm going elsewhere and get same cover for last year's price.

Renewed a policy I didn’t not want me without my agreement or request and then persistent threatened me with a charge if I didn’t pay for the unwanted new policy and despite many calls and conversations ignored the fact they had made an error. Not to be trusted.
