We will never renew our membership with the RAC again!! We have been loyal members for years, and service has always been excellent. I do not know what has happened since we last had to call them out, but the level of service now is almost non-existent. I wish I could leave negative stars. My husband's car engine shut out after driving through shallow standing water. He notified the RAC at approx 9.45am, using the very user-unfriendly app. He was told a recovery vehicle would be with him between about 2pm-5pm, and the app would be regularly updated. When nobody had arrived by about 4.30pm, and the app had not been updated, we phoned a few times and were told such different things by different people. The things we were told were not only inconsistent, but incompatible and downright untrue. We were told, amongst other things, that nobody was coming as driving through standing water is not covered, that somebody did come, but my husband was not with the car so they left a note on the vehicle (absolutely not true), that they couldn't get to the vehicle due to flood (not true, as I got to it to bring my husband some food), that they had assessed it's position and couldn't tow it (not true, we had it privately towed the next day), that a manager would phone us (this never happened). At one point they even advised us to call 999 and tell them our car would not start. We didn't do this, it would be a complete abuse of the 999 emergency system, but the RAC seemed to think this acceptable advice! At 6.30pm, I collected my husband myself, and we left the car where it was overnight. It turns out that the RAC will not recover a vehicle damaged due to flood water. This should be made clear in the policy. However, that being the case, that should be made clear when a breakdown is reported. Customers should not be told that somebody is coming for seven hours, and then be told that it is not covered. We had to privately recover the vehicle the next day, a Sunday, having wasted the whole of Saturday waiting for the RAC in the cold, wet, and dark. We complained, the RAC acknowledge the service fell short and apologised. They even acknowledged that we had been told various things that were simply not true, so they had lied to us. They said they were sorry, and this was the end of the matter. There was no goodwill gesture offered, no explanation as to how this had happened, and no information as to what steps would be taken to ensure the system is improved. The RAC have gone from an organisation that I trusted and relied on, to an organisation of dishonesty and disappointment, with an attitude that they don't even try to hide which clearly states "we don't care about you, or your vehicle, or that we lied to you, or that we let you down." I shall never, ever renew my membership with them again.

I am paying for a service that I did not receive and my kids would have potentially been home alone for 3+ hours, had I not found someone myself. Called at 21.45 as my key was stuck. RAC said they couldn't help, but would put me in contact with a locksmith. Said they would call within the hour. They were aware rhat my sons (9 and 11) were home alone. I waited an hour and then had to find my own locksmith as the boys had been left for so long. My locksmith came within 20 mins and sorted the key in 5 mins. 00.16 I finally got a call from an RAC locksmith but I was home in bed by then. Just glad I didn't rely on them or my boys would gave been hone alone for hours!

Rated 1 out of 5 stars Bought a battery for my car delivered… Bought a battery for my car delivered broken leaking acid, informed your co . you said not our problem its our suppliers they will deal with it. you and your suppliers completely ignored everything including pictures as reference . I informed you that contract was with you , you did nothing. left me with a battery in my home leaking acid. I disposed of said battery and got my bank to start a claim back. Bought battery from reputable co and waited weeks for my refund. Overall the experience as left me thinking I will never use your co again. not at all sure why you thought it was a good idea to get feedback from me. I guess that says it all, your co is badly organized and the people that work there don't care . Trust pilot blocking my adding an edit for RAC so I put it here instead. One unethical company covering the back of an other. NICE Despite my unsubscribing to RAC emails they still send requests.

My wife was left waiting in her broken down car today for more than 8hours. So much for prioritising calls from women on their own

Shockingly awful company. Waited 2 days for a breakdown engineer to arrive. Then had to book a repair. Paid £500 for them to come today, got text this morning saying they were coming. At 3pm called RAC to find out where the repair van was and was told they can’t do it today. Spent 25 mins on the phone and have rebooked for a weeks time but haven’t received any confirmation. Truly abysmal ‘service’. Will never renew cover with RAC.

Terrible. App doesn’t work and it’s nearly impossible to speak to a human being.

I have been with the RAC for about 25 years. I have called them out only a handful of times though last week having a flat tyre I called them. It is not possible to speak to a person in the first place but a text is sent with a link to a form that needs completing. Eventually after a lot of trial and error I managed to speak to someone who was thoroughly rude, uninterested in what I had to say and shouted at me saying I was talking over him, I was trying to be helpful. All this person wanted to do was sell me a new tyre without even looking at it. After saying I really wanted it to be looked at his reaction was, well you’ll just have to wait till someone is free and it was minimum 5 hours. Not only is this disgrace service but his vile tone was as if customers are a necessary inconvenience to them. I didn’t argue back as I took heed of their warnings that they can refuse to assist. I managed to get a local garage to assist but afterwards I rang the RAC again and let rip on them and I told them never ever to contact me again, not to remind me of renewal and my contract with them will be terminated. The other companies must be doing really well from all the customers they upset.

Reported issue at 19:30 in May, catastrophic oil leak so no fix possible. I explained recovery was needed twice. I rang 4 times, at about half one they agreed to book a local recovery as the RAC ones were busy (they have to pay more for local to do it needs manager approval) finally got home 05:30, when I was only an hours drive away. I rang to complain, got £30 but asked to cancel my opt in auto renewal. They didn't, and you can't cancel online so spent 25 minutes today cancelling. Horrible to deal with.

Travelling to Whitby for my 40th, we broke down on the A64. DPF light was coming on so we figured it was that. RAC came within the time stated, by this time the car wouldn't even start. Our car was plugged in, RAC man decided that the DPF was completely clogged and we needed to be towed back to Sheffield. 5 hours later recovery turned up, not knowing that there was me, my husband and dog in the car, so we all had to squeeze into his cab, as he was told he was only picking a car up, no passengers. We've then paid to have our car towed to a garage, and the mechanic is stumped because all the codes that were coming up in my car have been cleared. He doesn't know what is wrong with my car because it is not just the DPF, but there are no codes for him to find out. I still don't have my car back from the 2nd November, and it's costing money for us to leave the car at the garage.

I had to wait 10 hours to be seen by the RAC! I knew that my clutch had gone, I told them and that a passing mechanic had agreed. I was on my own, a woman, sitting in the freezing rain. I was told there were more important cases they had to go to, fair enough but if they had sent a mechanic on the way to another job, (it took 2 mins for their mechanic to agree) they could have ordered a tow truck, as I had to get back to Devon. I had broken down near Birmingham. I was so traumatised by the event , I hadn't read the terms and conditions and did not realise that if I wanted a car hire I should have told them within 24 hours. Although I have paid for it. I am now stuck in the middle of the countryside with no car and my car will not be ready for another week as my garage is overburden with work.

I needed a new battery for my car. As I was a member of the RAC I went to their battery replacement website, put in my registration and their website presented me with a list of 'the most suitable batteries' for my car. As the list was quite long, I just chose the first on the list, irrespective of cost, naively believing that the RAC would know what they were talking about. When the mechanic arrived he bluntly told me I had ordered the wrong battery!!! He fitted an alternative - that he said was still not 'ideal' but would 'do the job'. 4 Months later we have a series of electrical issues - so I call the RAC out again - and this time Im accused by their very surly mechanic of having ordered the wrong battery again! I showed him HIS website and HIS companies recommendations but he just said 'thats just a list mate - it doesnt mean its the right one for your car!!' I sent him away and will cancel my membership - JOIN THE RAC AT YOUR OWN RISK - they are a bunch of amateurs trading of a 'Royal' kite mark. PS you can see in the attached image I ordered the 1st in their list of 'Most suitable batteries for your vehicle'

They kept asking for more and more information. I worked tirelessly with the garage to provide all the info that they asked for. They crossed a line when they started saying that I would have to pay for the dismantling of my vehicle and depending upon the nature of what they see... They may accept or reject the claim. So I would be £1,500 out of pocket and would potentially have to pay for the rest of the repairs by myself. This is all facts, no fiction. I have the emails to back it up. The Financial Ombudsman will be hearing from me, regardless of the outcome of the claim. AVOID, AVOID, AVOID. They're a plague.

Friendly people seem to talk as if they know what the issue is, but my car was misdiagnosed three times and fitted with faulty refurbished parts. They were happy to take my money, but my car is still faulty. I’ve decided not to spend any more money with them and have chosen to cancel my RAC membership after this whole ordeal. RAC should stick to towing cars rather than offering roadside repairs at premium prices, especially when the repairs leave the car still faulty.

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY OR THE RAC.. YOU JUST LIED TO CONTINUALLY.. THERE ALWAYS SAYING ONE MORE HOUR. I'VE BEEN SAT HERE FOR THREE HOURS. I UNDERSTAND IT'S BUSY BUT THE LIES ARE WHAT'S MOST PAINFUL.. THEY LIE SAYING THEY'RE DEALING WITH AN EMERGENCY FOR THE POLICE WHICH THEY'RE JUST TIDYING UP B STRAIGHT WITH YOU.. THEY DON'T EVEN RECORD DOWN THEIR LIES BECAUSE WHEN THEY CALLED ME BACK THEY TOLD ME THE SAME LIE AGAIN.. BEWARE OF WESTBOURNE MOTORS. THEY ARE A CONTRACTOR FOR THE RAC. I PROMISE YOU ALL THEY WILL DO IS TELL YOU ONE MORE HOUR ONE MORE HOUR ONE MORE HOUR. AFTER THREE FAILED ATTEMPTS I PRACTICALLY BEGGED THE RAC TO DEPLOY A DIFFERENT COMPANY TO ME. THEY TOLD ME IF THEY LET ME DOWN AGAIN THEY WILL SEND SOMEBODY ELSE BUT I NEED TO BE LET IT DOWN FOR A FOURTH TIME BEFORE THEY WILL CALL ANOTHER COMPANY AND THEN MAKE ME WAIT A MINIMUM OF ANOTHER 60 TO 90 MINUTES. I'VE BEEN HERE SINCE 7:00 P.M. AND IT'S NEARLY MIDNIGHT. I EXPLAINED TO THE CALL CENTRE OPERATIVE THAT THREE MONTHS AGO IT TOOK EIGHT ATTEMPTS OVER A THREE-DAY PERIOD TO GET MY MOTORBIKE PICKED UP FROM THE HOUSE. 2 MONTHS BEFORE THAT THE RAC LEFT ONE OF OUR ENGINEERS FROM 5:30PM TO 1AM BEFORE THEY PICKED HIM UP. THIS IS VERY DIFFERENT TO THE EXPERIENCE WE'VE HAD WITH THE AA.. STRONGLY URGE ANYONE THINKING ABOUT GETTING A BREAKDOWN POLICY TO STEER CLEAR OF THE RAC

What a waist of time, rang 1.00pm then told it could be 10.00pm already moved up once. Will risk driving the car home really slowly. To old to wait 10 hours for recovery. Original time 4.50 till 7.50 bad enough. Would not recommend.
