Only giving 1 star because I couldn’t give 0! Absolute joke for the money you pay monthly! Broke down at a service station at 4pm, someone came to us in 20 mins but explained they could only drive 1hr down the road due to the equipment (trailer) and someone else would meet us at the next service station to take us the extra 1hr 10 home. Was dropped off at the next services at 6:45 and was told it wouldn’t be too long to wait. By 7.30 we called just to check that someone else was coming as the app showed the job as “completed” so no way of getting an update unless I called. Was told that they would be there at 7:45pm. Waited until 8.45 and called again. Was told the driver had actually cancelled but nobody told us and they have now passed it to a third party and they will call me to arrange direct and I will get a text with all the info. Text came through, very generic and no info. Waited until 9:45, he said he can see from the update the third party is on his way and is 28 mins to be exact away. Apologised for the delay but assured us to wait rather than staying at a hotel (that my policy covers) as this would be the quickest way. He advised due to all the messing around they would drop my car off at a friends garage (9 miles from my home) and pay for a taxi to get me home. The driver finally turned up at 11pm! He said he only received the order at 9:55 and came straight there so didn’t know where the 28 mins was told to them. Ended up getting home at 1am. Today I have called to discuss a hire car as part of my onward travel policy to be told because I accepted the “courtesy taxi” to get me home this voids any courtesy car as it’s one or the other. Been passed to 6 different people on the phone to then be cut off due to their lines closing! Absolute joke of a company! Save your money and go elsewhere

I’m a disabled driver with a motorbility vehicle. I ran out of charge at a charging point, it would not take my car the only one I have . First of all was told by the patrol coming out to me rach cancelled it as it’s a 4 wheel drive and cannot be towed , I told them it is not 4 wheel drive. They told me to go home and someone will come out too me on the morning , they provided the taxis , got the the patrol man came and said there’s nothing I can do as you haven’t broke down and your at a charge point , when telling him it’s not taking my card he just got in his van and off he went not a care in the world left me stranded I’m female with disabilities. RAC don’t care disgusting if you ask me .

The star is for the independent tow service. No stars for RAC. Two weeks ago- called RAC-eta constantly changing. I was on busy road, dark and no medications and low battery. I repeatedly rang for update- each time was as if new and having to explain. I added re mobility poor. Gentleman turned up at midnight. Changed £670 for injector and he also said he was sitting at services ages and unsure why they only just called him. Same issues with car yesterday. Broke down on slip road early evening. Lone female. No lights nor near a town. Have Parkinson’s. Difficult to get through to them, told at ten pm no RAC in area. Tow to compound only then get taxi home. They wanted me to leave key under car and it would be collected in next few days and dropped off to me-police even said to them invalidates insurance. RAC said tow 11.15pm and guaranteed to police by midnight. Five minutes later it was cancelled. I was told by tow company that rac made the decision but rac lied to me. They also tried to say I can only have one call out a year when I have unlimited. By one am they admitted there was no RaC nor tow services available and they would arrange hotel. They asked if I could walk at one am six miles to nearest hotel! They paid for taxi in the end and hotel, but only single room on third floor as cheaper for them. I can’t do the stairs and kind porter at hotel gave me accessible room. No breakfast included. Told I’d be informed in morning of new time. No contact- I called them at 9.30am and they said tow to home at 11.15am. I said will need a taxi. They thought I’d find my own way back! They reluctantly agreed to arrange. Got a call from tow person at my car 10.15 and he offered to collect me and we towed car back home. Once home ( 3jrs later) I realised there was no contact re taxi or update. I called rac and they were had it as still waiting for tow and they could see no one had arranged taxi. Absolutely disgusting and no empathy for anyone with a physical disability. Go with green flag or AA people. Horrendous. Added to everything, just been told by local garage that they could have done the injector for just over £350 including labour!!

Last night 13/06/2024 while driving along M1 motorway on my way home my car dashboard sign went off and it had something to do with my engine oil, I do not have any experience or knowledge about cars and not so very sure what to do, so I pulled over on the hard shoulder next to a driver who was broken down as well. So I decided to contact my recovery service associated with my insurance (1st Central) at (09:00 pm) which is RAC and they have sent me a link to fill out what happened to my car and where is my location. Cut a story short I have waited for them till (23:30) on a freezing pouring rain in a very dangerous part of the M1 motorway. I have also contacted them six times (6x) and they keep passing me to different agents and the agents keep telling me that they are going to send a dispatch team. One of their dispatch team contacted me and he said that I was pass on to another dispatch team. Without any communication at all! They do not update you on what is going on! you need to keep calling them to get an update! A nice helpful gentleman from AA called Garry who came for the other motorist who is pictured here helped me to get my car fixed. This is RAC’s job but AA and Garry is very nice to help me because it is getting late and there is no sign or update from RAC about my recovery and its going to be 12 AM. They're service is very poor! I was with AA recovery on my recent insurance but I gave RAC a try. But oh I was not expecting a poor service from RAC. I have pictures and videos to prove this claim. I will never use RAC again please use AA recovery associated with your motor insurance company.

My son picked his new car up and it broke down at 7pm was told some one would attend 11pm to 2 am then 10am then 11pm to 1pm then 2am to 6am we then Oldham to forget it. How unprofessional. Was a good job he wasn’t at side of motorway and he was at home. Great start for a new driver for his confidence

I called at 1700 to state I had broken down at the ferry port in Liverpool. 10 mins later I got a call from isle of Man asking where I was. I told him I was in Liverpool. He stated I needed to call the rac again as they had made a error. I called rac and they confirmed it our job had been allocated. A couple of hours passed and the app just kept moving the time on. After 4 further calls one of the rac staff gave me the number of recovery company (who was picking me up. Spoke to the manager who stated that they were not going to take us home and to call the Rac again. He stated we could do a shared recovery but to call the Rac to make sure they sort out getting us home as he stated you probably be sat there for hours This was now 2000 hrs. So I called again. Rac but me on hold, they called the recovery company and stated it was all arrange. They turned up and took us 22 miles to Burntwood east service station. Arrived around 2230 hrs I called rac again and was told 2330 was when the next recovery was arriving. After several more phone calls and numerous promises to get a call back from the dispatch team. Which never happen ..Called again a 2355 hrs to be told it will be another 50mins. Called at 0055 hrs (18 min call) now been told there is no eta. Offered a hotel but that's on the other side on the motorway with no paths and my bike would be left on the car park of the service station. We even had a police officer come over to us to move it closer to the building as they have had a lot stolen during the TT week. Rac stated that's not their problem. So I was told I need to call back in another hour. Called at 0147.. New eta of 0244. Phoned at 0249 Did get a call back 2 mins later Been told 30 to 40.mins away However 10 min later. he turned up at 0300. Surprised However he is only taking us to Wolverhampton. He stated he only got the job one hour ago... Apparently the day staff will take us home when they start at around 6am Arrived at Wolverhampton depot at 0448hrs. Arrived home 0648 hrs Total of 14 phone calls

I made the awful mistake of letting my tax run out for a week , then rang RAC as I had broken down ,they refused to pick me up as I had no tax , so I taxed the vehicle , phone up 2 days later to get picked up and they charged me £170 for the error of reporting a accident with no tax , it’s a con I have checked with the AA and they don’t do it , why should you pay for something you never had ?

I kept getting updates about ETA which pushed my time slot forward, again and again. I ended up waiting for 6 hours already (after I was told again and again someone would be there soon) when a new update pushed my slot to 2.20 - 5.20 in the morning! I was a female driver, alone, in a dark street. I obviously couldn't accept this slot. I had to leave my car and find a way to return home, alone, at 12.30 in the morning. They could only offer apologies but no help or support.

ZERO STARS don't touch. Go with AA. Young driver broke down midnight, dark, raining, unsafe location. Called RAC who said he didn't have any recovery. Although he knew he had, he knew he'd need recovery so he had to leave his car, call police, and pay to get home. Then first thing in the morning pay for recovery. Complaining to AVIVA that they'd sold recovery when RAC said they hadn't. This was all in March. Only now after Aviva looking into it, they say the issue is with RAC. So put a complaint with RAC, who basically say yes they said we didn't have recovery, which was wrong. But... WAIT FOR IT, because we cancelled the call out, which we had no option as there was no recovery, they THIS BUNCH OF COWBOYS, say they're not at fault!!! WHAT A JOKE... BUNCH OF FRAUDSTERS... stay well clear. I'm off back to AA!!!

I’ve been with the RAC for over 20 years. I was working at a different location for my job….not using my car to transport goods or making money from my car. Not a fleet vehicle. Not a company vehicle. My windscreen wiper flew off on a busy dual carriageway and it was raining heavily. 90 minutes to get through to find I’m not covered. £165 to come out for a windscreen wiper, which I had to wait another 90 minutes for. RAC you are a complete joke. Cancelled policy and gone with the AA.

Shocking customer service, cant find existing policy, will not honour item listed as covered. No call backs, no emails received, they love that it is so difficult to get hold of them. Constantly asked me to contact the RAC approved garage, constantly asked me to call back - RAC ! THATS YOUR JOB - be great if anyone actually did it !

I am writing this to ensure nobody falls for sales tactics in shopping centres or conducts their own self purchases of RAC online . I had door to door cover and broke down last Sunday just north of Exeter at 4 pm . The RAC took my call and promptly passed me around on 3 occasions different lines whilst on a dangerous road to take their excess payment of £40 . They then told me they could not guarantee a pick up time . No updates were issued or follow ups and left me without any idea on what to do . Bad news is bad news but being fobbed off is worse . After I had to re ring and ring I was offered a possible 2 am pick up with my car or a quicker option of a hire car pick up and my car to follow 3-5 working days . This was a clear cheaper strategy to push you towards a hire car. I took the second option but there was no explanation of how this would work . The wrong location was given to the eventual pick up . At 10.15 Pm a private contracted out trucktook my car to the next service station in Taunton which was a whole 15 minutes journey . He had only been asked to do this at 8 pm and decided to do another job first despite my car being first on his list . There was no linking with a hire car and no details on how to avoid fines for leaving a clapped out car at services or where to leave the key for later transit of my car . I later found out RAC only pay £70 to Enterprise cars to give their customers a car if they cannot meet their contractual obligations . By the time we received the hire car and sorted out leaving my broken down car safely it was 12 midnight . 4 pm break down , 12 midnight and my car had been moved about 10 miles . I had to then drive back to Manchester arriving at 4 am. A nice round 4, 4 pm break down home by 4 am . It is now 5 days and my car has not been returned . No updates again or calls to explain . Poor resourcing of staff and capital is starting to be a common theme in the Uk but on top the RAC offer no communication or customer care . The help line is inhuman and purely delivered in a functional manner without any functional outcomes . On top they only answer what they are asked and don’t offer any other information that would help calm or explain a poor situation . Elderly or people with poor health would be at direct risk from this company . Please don’t use RAC for your own safety and don’t fall for their sakes tactics in shopping precincts .At times reviews can only see one side of the argument or be over dramatic but the above is 100% factually accurate account of the RAC on the M4 motorway
