Purfleet Europcar. Worst experience ever! Problems with every aspect of the rental. Impossible to contact the branch. Was left with a broken down vehicle on our drive for 12 days. Now they are charging for petrol when we returned the car with more fuel than when it was delivered. And charging for the days it was broken down on our drive, when we had no use of the car. An absolute scandal!

Booked and paid for 2 days HIRE online to pick up a car atBelfast Intl Airport, travelling home for my mother's funeral. When I arrived they said they had no car available, despite me having booking confirmation email etc, and the fee taken from my bank account. I was not very happy, had to go to Hertz who sorted out a car for me in 10 mins, even though I hadn't booked with them and had never used them before. I will certainly be using Hertz from now on! Europcar, whom I have used previously, have lost my custom!

Appalling customer service! I have sent 6 emails since the 16th of May 2023 (now 24 July 2023) to customer.relations@europcar.com.au and have not even had the courtesy of a response. I have received the automated reply after each email stating that someone will get back to me within 7 working days. I even called their reservations team to try and get another email contact but 'apparently' the only one they use is the customer relations email (that i've been using). Worst business i have ever dealt with who obviously don't care about their customers. At least have the decency to respond. Over 2 months and counting.

booked from australia for uk travel, charged £1K for 2wks. told no cars avail victoria or Padd as busy time , to pick up H'row 9 am.& left deposit. Car was new but had automatic engine lockdown on reverse in narrow lanes registering hedges as an obstructing vehicle.- a nightmare, - also wing mirrors do not retract when needed to pass ongoing vehicles on narrow country one vehicle only lanes. BOTH are DESIGN FAULTS. On return to H'row was charged £40 for picking up & dropping off at H'row as 'prime location' + £260 for 'scratch' on car wh their computer identified as being below painted surface so car needed REPAINT before being rented out again. 'scratch' was within cm range allowed for usage within agreement. This charge was made immed without any opp to contest it & taken from my deposit & bank card details. In addition accidental entry into v confusing london congestion zones ( one side rd has C chg & opp side none! ) & another car pushing my vehicle into the bus lane at Marble Arch , so I had to move to avoid collision, incurred another fine. TFL said no info on their computer when I foned & paid TFL last chg I knew of & wanted to pay bus lane chg wh I said wld be on camera as I was innocent party plus to check wh side of exit rd 2 wks ago had incurred a chg , I was informed their policy is if fines are not paid within 24 hrs , extra fees are added on indefinitely thus incuring £00s & as the Europcar was registered to the company, no info could be released to me as customer & driver & all penalty notices wld be sent to Europcar. Europcar at H'row stated nothing was on their computer from TFL re the vehicle & could take 3-4 wks to come thru & they would email me in australia the penalty TFL notices to be paid by me. I am CONTESTING all above & EXPECT TOTAL REFUNDS on ALL additional COSTS from EUROPCAR including excessive HIRE charges & want Photo & Documentary PROOF that my hire car has been REPAINTED AFTER I returned it OR REPAY me the £s U charged me! Customers are NOT idiots or fools nor do they EXPECT hire companies like Europcar to TREAT them as such . we are NOT supporting YR company any more NOR recommending U to anyone else! I RECOMMEND to ALL prospective drivers, DONOT HIRE from EUROPCAR & DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DRIVE IN LONDON . AVOID BOTH LIKE THE PLAGUE. Europcar & TFL are dishonest & RIP OFF UNSUSPECTING OVERSEAS TRAVELLERS like myself wanting to VISIT UK & family for a HAPPY FAMILY HOLIDAY. . BUYER /RENTER/VISITOR BEWARE. SAVE YR SANITY STRESS & MONEY. UK is NO GO & RIPOFF EVERYWHERE to 'REBUILD ECONOMY!!' at YR EXPENSE!!

ABSOLUTE SCAM!!! DO NOT BOOK WITH THEM!! We booked a car and paid the insurance on their website. When we arrived they said that insurance had nothing to do with them and that we had to pay for full insurance. That cost OVER TWICE THE PRICE OF THE CAR! When we tried to find a cheaper insurance they said we couldn’t and could only book with American Express. That we needed a letter from our bank to say our credit cards were valid!!! Since when??!! I book cars all over and especially in Ireland at least 2 a year and have NEVER been told such absolute BS. They contradicted themselves several times but would not even try to accommodate us. They then continued to take the insurance from my Spanish CC but said it would not be valid to book the car..??? Are we not in the EU? It was a Visa! Nothing made sense. We will NEVER book with them again. They tried to say we could claim back the original paid insurance but it wasn’t true as once you’ve received the car it becomes activated. They blamed Booking.com and said they had no connection to this third party insurance. When asked why they allowed it in connection to them they had no answer. The woman remarked that they have many complaints like this. When I asked why they continue to collaborate with Booking.com if they are “scamming” their customers she shrugged. THEY ARE WORKING TOGETHER TO SCAM PEOPLE. DO NOT BOOK WITH THEM. The car wasn’t great either. NEVER AGAIN!!! They later went on to charge my card an additional 102€ (for no apparent reason as the tank was full and we obviously had full coverage). When I flagged this up on Trustpilot they replied saying it had been refunded. This has not happened though and the official office will not return my email! SCAMMERS!!!

Europcar lie and steal. I was quoted £230 for a Full Size SUV. When I arrived to collect they told me they'd contacted me in advance to tell me that only a much smaller car was available. They did no such thing. Faced with 'this or nothing' I took the car, though was promised I would be not be charged for the full size SUV as I'd received a smaller car. The car was so small I couldn't get three carseats across the back. Consequently, I missed my son's sports day and parent's evening. I called to complain that the car would not do. I was told three things: that I would only be charged for the smaller car, that they would be in contact to provide me with a larger car, and that they would escalate the complaint to customer service in pursuit of a further partial refund. All three of these statements were lies. In the event, they charged me for the full size SUV I never received. They provided no further cars, never contacted me, never referred me to customer services. Only randomly charged me £50 for fuel with no warning. I contacted customer services, which are based overseas, and was told that they would have to refer me to another department, who would then email me. This department sent me a curt email, telling me I had not been overcharged and would receive no refund. They got basic facts about my reservation wrong, such as the car model. I emailed back and got no response. This is by far the WORST company I have ever used. I would use Enterprise every time from now on. If anyone ever mentions the words 'Europe' or 'car' to me, I will be sure to tell them how awful Europcar are as a company.

Recently rented from Europcar Dartford Booked online through Europcar website for 2 days. At the time it could have been more and I was genuinely expecting it to be more days but as it turned out I was called back to work on the first day of rental. I had the car back before the 1 day rental time and left the car with a mechanic / car prep guy as the office had been flooded that morning and the office staff were working from a different office as a result. He said he would book it in in the next 15 mins. Received the invoice. Firstly he did not book it in within the 15 mins but in fact 3 hours and 9 mins later at 4.09 pm which as you can guess took me into day 2 . More Importantly and here’s the rub, if you book a car online for 2, 5, 10 , 14 days (however many days but more than 1) and your circumstances change then you will still be charged for the full rental. I found that fact a little disingenuous and I can’t help but feel the online booking is a bit of a con trick. It may be very slightly cheaper but there’s no pop up dialogue box to warn you that the above is the case. They just quote their terms and conditions. So I was going to get charged 2 days irrespective. I could have taken my company at their word and booked it for a week as that was the original time frame. I can prove that I was in that vicinity by receipts for fuel and lunch from the garage right next door but their ‘investigation’ ignored that fact. The car was not ready to boot so my rental agreement time and the time I actually received the car differ by at least 30 mins which if you were relying on that time thinking I got it at 3 so I bring it back at 3 , think again. Won’t use Europcar again .

I hired a car from Exeter Airport after trying to book online and it wouldn't let me because I selected Australian and then I emailed customer support about it but they didn't respond until it was too late even though you claim to be open 24/7. After showing online that there 15 cars available at the Exeter airport when I got there there was only 1 car left which was about 3x the price that I had been quoted online. I didn't really have an option as I needed a car. The man at the desk also wasn't very helpful at all and told me that the car would be in a certain bay in the car lot but it was not where he or the envelope said it would be so I had to spend ages walking around the carpark pressing the button to try and find this car. The itself wasn't too bad but not worth the price I paid for it. It had lane departure assist which I could not turn off and quite frankly was a bit dangerous because it worked against you trying to correct where you were on the road. It was not fuel efficient at all and chewed through the fuel which made the process even more costly. I have already sent an email in about this and haven't had a reply since which was about 3wks ago now. Then when I needed to extend my rental by a couple of days the lady I spoke to was incredibly rude and refused to send me a confirmation or a transcript of what was discussed on the phone. To top off this incredibly subpar experience the company is now holding the entire rental amount still from my account so it's like I've had to pay for the overpriced car rental twice over and I still haven't received the deposit that I paid either even though they think that they have sent it back it is nowhere to be seen in my account. To say that I am disappointed in this experience is an extreme understatement. I will never be using Europcar again and I will not be recommending it to any friend or colleagues.

Beware of the office at Carcassonne Airport. Arrived with a prepaid voucher and during the check-in process was asked if I could drive an automatic. Saying yes was considered a "customer requested upgrade" and was charged extra. Complained to Customer Services who did nothing.

The biggest scam I've ever seen. I reserved online for 130$ Canadian for 8 days. Arrived in Cancun, they charged me 480$ USD (about 800$ Canadian) for the car. They refused to recognize my global credit card insurance and surcharged me a 100$ insurance fee. Last time of my life I rent with this scammy car company.

Do not use this company! So I travelled to Ireland where we'd hired a car for four days. Everything was fine until I returned the car to Europcars compound at the end of the hire. The car was returned about 5.30pm, which was well within the return time. But unfortunately nobody to deal with me! The car was as it was when I hired it so I took photos of the car from every side and angle I could as I'd read that Europcar can try to blame damage etc on the hirer. To my surprise, I was sent an email with a photo of one of the tyres deflated? I know if that tyre was flat or punctured, it would have alerted me on the display! It hadn't! I requested photos of the actual damage to the tyre and CCTV of the area, as when I left the car there was no security or anything preventing someone coming on to the compound. Europcar said there was no CCTV? They also said that they don't have to show the actual damage to the tyre? So, hold on! The tyre was inflated on the photos I sent them. They said it was the side wall of the tyre, although there was no damage to the wheel? Also, on the photo of the 'punctured' tyre, there was no sign of damage? I tried to reason with these people and said I understood their position, so I would make a contribution. They flatly refused to negotiate and threatened me with their solicitors! They even tried to tell me that the car was my responsibility after I'd finished my hire and handed the keys to them? To be honest I can't be bothered to fight it, so I have paid the £242.18 and treated it as an expensive lesson learned! There are better and more transparent rental companies out there! I will never use EUROPCAR again! My sons business will never use EUROPCAR again! I will make sure everyone I know hear of my experience with EUROPCAR! I will make sure my colleagues and employers never use EUROPCAR! Don't trust these people! They will threaten you and try to make extra money from you any way they can! Let my expensive lesson not be yours!

Winter Tyres!!! Booked online, it said winter tyres included. At the airport in Geneva, no winter tyres. Instead they charged me 80 Euros to rent some snow socks which are about as useful as a chocolate fire guard. It is a requirement by law in France to have winter tyres fitted, why are they sending their customers in to the mountains with summer tyres. Tried to get a refund and a answer from them, they don't care one bit, complete scammers. Do not trust this company, they are substandard and fraudulent.

This company chose to milk every customer they get instead of providing good service. We rented a car in Liberia Costa Rica airport in advance. Our flight was delayed by 3 hours When we were brought to the rental center we were the only customers The toilet there was broken. The agent try to bully us into spending more money, even though we had prepaid for even optional insurance and booked the car we needed. The car was a wreck with a broken bumper and covered in dents and scratches. The tank was 5/8 full, and when I complained they offered us to wait few hours while they fill it. On the return they tried to charge us for some sand on the seats of this wreck of a car as they couldn’t find any additional damages to charge us for. Terribly disappointed

I bought a car for one month online. first up they refuse to deliver the car within 3 miles distance to my residence and also returning car I did self. throughout the process absolutely no support they have charged me extraordinarily two times as a service fee for paying one fine. the traffic fine I have paid myself and even paid 40 pounds of service charge for Europcar however for my surprise they send me again one more invoice for 40 pounds with the new invoice number. I can only say this is the worst ever rent a car company in UK and I advise everyone keep away from this company they are daylight robbers.

I booked with Europcar for pickup in Auckland and return two weeks later in Queenstown. At that time, no one mentioned that Europcar did not allow its cars on the inter-island ferries. At the time of pickup, after waiting for three hours, I was told I would have to turn in the car at the ferry port in Wellington and obtain a new car in Picton. I was assured this was routine and did not need to make any other arrangements. I was NOT warned that ferries departing in the afternoon might arrive after the Picton office was closed. I returned my car in Wellington at 3pm, told the agent I was taking the next ferry at 3:40, and would be arriving in Picton around 8pm. I was NOT told that the Picton office always closed at 5pm. The ferry was delayed. I attempted to call the Picton office. No one returned my call. I arrived at the Picton office to find it closed and attempted to call the two numbers listed on the office door for after hours. No one responded. I called the main Europcar office in New Zealand, which referred me to the Australian office, which referred me to the European office, which told me they could not help me (after 35 minutes on the phone). I walked into town with my luggage (no transportation was available at the station), forfeited my hotel reservation in Kaikoura, and slept at a backpacker hostel. (Hotels in Picton were fully booked or closed.) I asked via email to be reimbursed for the cost of lodging forfeited. After 7 email exchanges with 4 offices, I was told I would be credited the night’s hotel cost and the cost of one day’s rental by way of apology. I returned the car, was told an invoice would be forthcoming, but was assured the notes in my file would be taken into account. I was billed for the full amount of my trip, no reimbursement and no credits by way of apology. After another 14 emails with 5 offices, I was told they would credit my account for one day ($75) but not reimburse me for the hotel ($245). I was never credited for the day. Don't even think of using Europcar.

The car was fine. The return in Balogna (we rented in Florence) was confusing but ultimately we realized the location to return was in the train station parking lot. There was no representative to receive the car and the office located several blocks away told us to put the keys in a drop box that was in the below ground garage. We did not cause damage to the car but roughly 6 months later received an email and some photos of the car which showed damage we knew nothing about. We requested supporting documentation, (from customer service via their email address), such as metadata showing when the photos were taken but received nothing but a follow up request for payment. So now Europcar will try to ruin our credit - NICE!!!
