Refuse to return deposit or put as a credit towards a future holiday when the international borders open up

I wish I could give Sykes cottages no stars. I am absolutely appalled at the level of service I have received. We booked one of the top properties in their portfolio for 2022 and due to myself and my sister being key workers for the NHS we were unable to get the time off and had to cancel. Not only is the property live on their website but they have refused to refund my deposit of £350.00. Sykes cottages be warned people will remember this and will never book with you again. Myself and my family being one of those people!

@sykescottages you don’t just rent cottages😞My recent stay shown as a house and given a house name led me to believe £700 for 2 nights wasn’t too bad, what I got was a first floor flat with no garden/outdoor facilities. You should have called it Flat 4. 😡😡😡😡. I rented this so called cottage for an emotional anniversary and ended up with something totally unsuitable for me and my senior dogs. Marketing cleverly leave ‘Flat 4’ out of the address and lead you to believe it is in fact a cottage when only in the small writing does it say first floor flat. No garden to sit in, nowhere outside to sit in, no welcome message from owner with things of interest (laminated during covid??). Two nights for £700 would be stretching it a bit in a cottage but for a first flat is absolutely unbelievable. The (presumably) owners of the flat below left their bins outside the front door that was not a pretty sight. I think you are renting this property under false pretences and i am so annoyed to have fallen for your devious ploy. Call yourself a cottage company then rent cottages and if the property is not a cottage make it absolutely obvious in the address when advertising. Sadly we have to learn from our bad experiences but at least I know not to usethis company again 😞

strongly recommend DO NOT book through Sykes as my experience has been really appalling and that there properties are not upto the H&S standards of a typical holiday rental you expect never mind the added requirement from the Government about cleanliness during Covid-19 times. I booked a weeks holiday in the May 21 half term for myself and foster child at Bryn Morfa cottage, Carmel and we lasted 3 nights only due to a number of issues. On arrival the toilet seat was hanging off the toilet, there was mold spots in the back part of the cottage, dried food on every plate, pot, drainer and walls, in the main bedroom hair and fluff on the actual bed frame as well as the skirting boards, disgusting filthy bath mat and toothbrush holder, the oven smelt like it had a STI, cigarette butt's all over the back garden as well as branches, uneven and broken paving that was a trip hazard waiting to happen and grass over grown, a rickety dining room table that you couldn't cut anything on your plate without your drink spilling and an unpleasant egg smell wafting from just outside the property right the way through the downstairs of the property and only luke warm water available, to lock the backdoor you physically had to fight the door to lift it up to lock it and the pretty nettles leading into the property. All these issues were aware by Claire the person responsible for the property before we got there however some of them only got dealt with because I complained and I received a partial refund however she did get rude saying I was never happy when I further complained as I went to use the hob and the whole oven was broken luckily the kind neighbour fried our sausages and the disgusting egg smell from the septic tank got too overwhelming and unpleasant nothing was done about this and I was told it sometimes happens. It was that bad through the whole house and the neighbour could also smell it therefore I informed Claire we would be leaving as the smell was awful and it was absolutely roasting that week. Long story cut short the owner Alice contacted me appalled apparently and not aware of these issues until I raised them and informed me I would receive a full refund and was a woman of her word and I believed her however one month later I'm still trying to obtain the full refund as promised and my initial conversation was with a rude Daniel at Sykes and was all about how the owner had tried to resolve everything and my points are why aren't the basics provided such as total cleanliness, hot water, no unpleasant septic tank smell, no trip hazard in the back, fully functioning clean oven, backdoor that shuts for security not with a gap??? I can honestly say I had the total ick from the first night surrounded by hair and fluff on the bed frame and skirts and the next day Claire hoovered it but I didn't sleep one wink after being creeped out the initial night. A whole team was then put in to gut the cottage so it was ready for the next family that Friday (we left Tuesday evening at 9.30pm for a 4 hour journey) and the cottage is fully booked for the next few months however I'm still waiting for the rest of my refund or any contact from Sykes following my emails and photos and the owner keeps saying Sykes is dealing with it to my requests please chase them up as they're not and it's nearly a month later! The actual area and moors are spectacular as are the sunsets such a terrible shame we had such a bad experience as Snowdonia holds really dear memories for me and I wanted it to be special for my foster child as we were celebrating our one year anniversary together I know I'm realistic these people don't care that we save and spend are hard earned money to provide a lovely holiday experience for our loved ones and that us adults need a break especially after the testing times of Covid. I'm still utterly disappointed, frustrated shocked and upset about this whole debacle and need another holiday ha ***** July still no response to countless emails to Sykes and owner doesn't give a scooby *****

The house was disgustingly filthy on arrival! We had just had a 7 hour car journey with a toddler and then had to try and find a hotel with a room available at 8pm on a Friday evening, with a tired and hungry child. And Sykes had the nerve to refuse me a refund until I threatened legal action! Awful company, will never use them again.

I'm the same as another reviewer. We had Jacks Hill booked for August, paid in full, then it got cancelled about 6 weeks before we go. Ferries booked, activities booked and deposits paid. Took over 30 mins to get through on the phone, then it all moved to email. Standard responses fobbing me off. They offered a low compensation, and then emailed to say that it had been calculated incorrectly and it should have been even lower. Doesnt even cover 50% of the ferry cost. We've managed to get another property through asking on a local facebook site - its costing us a hell of a lot more though. Certainly wouldn't recommend to anyone, or use again.

Disgraceful service from Sykes. Good Housekeeping Bond of £200 taken from my account without any discussion beforehand, as advertised would be the case, based on incorrect information from property owner. Their response to my complaint about this, after several telephone calls, emails and letter to Customer Relations Team, was that their ‘discussion’ consisted of the email I received at the end of the day when their office was closed, the same day they withdrew the £200 - sneaky & underhand!! They have no interest in the owner’s false claims of damage and remedial charges, including charge for item we actually reported to the owner as being faulty! Their advice is to pursue through small claims court as it is not their problem and is a dispute between myself and owner, despite them taking this money.

Booked a cottage in Harlech North Wales July 21, arrived but couldn't get into the cottage until 5pm, sat having a drink & I got an email at 1.15pm to say cottage canceled due to a leak in property! the email offered us alterative accommodation double & treble what we had paid for canceled cottage & no where near to us!! Skyes left us stranded, it was very upsetting & stressful, when I complained it was you'll get your money back, not even an apology, Be very careful if anything goes wrong don't expect any help.

I booked a 2 week holiday for August 2022. I have stayed at Compton House with my family before and we loved it so we wanted to go back with our children and grandchildren for a special family celebration next year. Everyone was really excited about what was going to be a special event for our family. We were shocked to receive a telephone call this week to say the owners have changed their minds and will now renege on our booking. In the meanwhile prices have gone up and we will not be able to find equivalent accommodation within our budget. This is disgraceful behaviour and I think that the owners of the property and Sykes Cottages have broken their contract with us. Had the owners decided that they no longer wish to rent out their property that is their prerogative but, at the very least, they should honour existing contracts.

I booked a house, Jacks Hill in Ventnor, in January. To go 27 August for a week. I paid the deposit and in June the balance. I received confirmation email with key code and welcome pack. Yesterday 7th July I was told it was all cancelled. I received various excuses, I was offered money back. I had hired car, paid for ferry arranged to be near friends. Booked sailing for my kids. I can’t find anything else suitable. They have literally ruined my and my family’s summer. I had to hang on for 45 mins to speak to someone who sounded like they were reading from a script. What’s the point in booking if they can cancel on a whim. I am speechless!

Property 114 By the Sea , Pakefield, Suffolk. On our first night as we sat in the kitchen a mouse scurried across the floor and promptly disappeared behind a fridge/freezer. I contacted the owner the same night. There was no response until the Sunday. (I contacted owner on the Friday.) A mouse friendly trap was left on the doorstep on the Monday. This had no effect. Contacted owner again. They sent plug-in deterrents, which arrived on the Tuesday. On reading instructions it stated that mice activity would increase initially. We had a 5 month old baby with us. We did not use plug ins as the last thing we wanted was to be overrun with vermin. On Wednesday it was suggested that we could leave early. We were due to leave on Friday morning. We stayed because our party had not only travelled a couple of hundred miles to the destination, but the cattery had been booked and paid for and the equipment that had been packed for a young baby was substantial. It was supposed to have been a relaxing break for the new mum. As you can imagine she was very stressed by the presence of mice in the property. Thank god the baby wasn’t crawling. Below is a photo of the result of mice activity at the property during our stay. Mouse scratching was heard from inside the cupboard on a nightly basis and an actual mouse seen on three separate occasions. The owner claimed they had never had mice in the property before. I refute that as there was an established route and a locked cupboard in which the mice congregated.

Last year we rented four cottages with no problems and all were very clean, due to Covid. Last week we stayed in All Saints View , Cockermouth and this was the opposite, parts of it looked like they had not been touched for weeks, dust cobwebs and dirt everywhere on the ground floor, although the upper floor was acceptable. We reported this to Sykes and they said they would get the cleaners back. We declined as we were half way through or stay and didn't want the disruption. On returning home I completed their feedback form detailing the unacceptable cleanliness, heard nothing and received no apology or comment. After chasing them up I received an email thanking me for my feedback, still no apologies. I will not be booking with them again.

Also known as 'Hogan's Cottages'. Booked and paid for holiday to the Republic of Ireland. Due to Covid restrictions, and as I live in England, I can not go. Current restrictions state I would need to isolate in Ireland for 10 days, and they 'may' review this on 19th July for all fully-vaccinated people. Problem 1: I travel on 18th July. Problem 2: I was a volunteer for Novavax vaccine research late last year, and am fully-vaccinated with a highly effective vaccine. However, as this vaccine is not yet officially approved, I do not have proof that anyone outside of England will accept. Therefore, on both counts I can not travel to the Republic of Ireland. And Sykes are refusing to refund me, so I am able to book something else in the UK - even though I am less than 12 days away from my departure, and current restrictions state that people from the UK can not travel to the Republic of Ireland without isolating for 10 days in a very expensive hotel! Absolutely shocking treatment! Do not book with this company - they take your money, and then deliver zero customer service and zero empathy for one of the many UK volunteers making it possible for everyone else to have their vaccinations...

I wish I read these reviews before I booked through Sykes! We have just come back from Daisy Cottage in Somerset. At first glance the cottage looked clean and tidy. We noticed a couple of issues but thought it might be an oversite by the cleaner, however on closer inspection. It was very apparent the place (especially the kitchen!) was in need of a deep clean. There were too many cleanliness issues to list, but some were: Kitchen drawers and cupboards dirty, inside and out some utensils caked in grease. Roasting tins need replacing Sockets thick with dirt. Cooker hood and spot lights very dirty Microwave not clean, inside or out Fridge needed cleaning properly Questionable stains on skirting and floor near toilet Thick dust in places and several cobwebs The list goes on.. We probably would have raised these issues after the holiday but because of Covid and the health and potential risks at the moment we raised it with Skyes. They told requesyed we send them pictures and they would contact the owner to arrange a deep clean! We thought nothing of it and hoped it was sorted, a cleaner would be arranged and recifty the issues and we could get on with our holiday. Instead, A few hours later the owners relative turned up at the cottage unannounced! We showed her some of the issues. You could tell from the onset she was quite dismissive, not interested and very rude towards us! She left abruptly, we felt very uncomfortable and upset after this. We called Sykes and explained what happened and told them we we wanted to leave, my husband has disabilities and a heart condition and we didn't need this stress we requested a refund! Unfortunately, when they went back to the owner although initially pleasant on arrival on the phone, would not refund or acknowledge the issues with cleanliness. Skyes said there is nothing they could do despite seeing the pictures and agreeing the place was not as clean as it should be. Not to lose the money we stayed in the end despite feeling very uncomfortable there and left a day early. We are extremely frustrated that Sykes were not interested in the state of the cottage and the fact we were (as paying guests!) treated very disrespectfully by the owners relative! We also had to call customer service back twice because they didn't call back (as promised!) bearing in mind it was a minimum 30 minute wait each time for anyone to answer the call!

We have just had a week at Jacks nest Poadmarch Farm Ash Mill, South Molton Devon. This two person accommodation on one level is fantastic. Elaine Cole was very pleasant and greeted us on arrival with cream tea. The farm is very peaceful and the surrounding areas an absolute delight. If you want a peaceful holiday with stunning views and a private garden in a beautiful cottage this is the place to go.
