Broke down, with a split radiator hose. Called RAC was told I'd have to wait 90 mins, 90 mins passed and had received texts saying they where on the way etc etc... Another hour after this I got told that they would be another 2 and a half hours!! Leaving me stranded in my car freezing, for 5 hours in total, I had to cancel the breakdown with the RAC and arrange for a local recovery agent to collect me, at quite some considerable cost. Completely disgraceful from such a well known company. And seemed to use every excuse under the sun as to why they where taking the time. Membership will be getting cancelled. Never again.

My car would not start during a trip to Leeds. I called the help line and was told, help would be with me in 90 mins. The driver called me and said he could be with me in 30 mins, when Simon arrived he honestly could not have been more helpful. I was back on the road 20 mins after he pulled up, after that service I will definitely be renewing next year. 5*

Thursday, 22nd October.2020. 2pm red warning light came on.......alternator belt extremely slack. 2.30pm. Phoned RAC and after pressing numerous buttons as directed operator answered. Problem outlined to him. said he would call back in ten minutes. 3pm. Still no call from operator, called him again and he apologised for noting something incorrectly. Would arrange for break-down to attend. 3.30pm called back stating break-down would be on site at 8.30pm. 4.30pm called to change time to 6.30 and later called to say no break-down available until the filling day. That’s when I really let them have it and at 9pm same night a break-down truck from another firm arrived and took car away. I have never dealt with such an incompetent bunch of idiots. This break-down bunch, the RAC, didn’t stick to their advertising motto ie be there in half an hour and if we can’t fix it etc etc. This service was arranged through my insurers and I shall have something to say to them later today. I gave up Britannia Rescue because of the package I took out, ie. three cars, house and another insurances. I shall return to Brittania but only after I get some discount for this galling experience. Rating. ZERO.

I had a battery fitted in January this year due to my old battery not working correctly. At the time the engineer let me know that the battery fitted had a 2 year warranty and if failed to work would be replaced free of charge. My van had some teething problems and had to be taken to the garage this week to be worked on, as a result they advised me that the battery needed changing and I remembered it was still under warranty with RAC. The engineer arrived today to check the battery and at first wasn't sure that you had fitted it as it wasn't the correct type you'd usually fit so firstly how can you give a 2 year warranty to a part you wouldn't usually fit and use as a replacement. Also it is still under warranty and they didn’t replace it because of some pathetic excuse. I'm very unhappy and feel like my trust with the RAC has gone.

Don't not use the RAC they do not have there own breakdown trucks they are all sub contractors and it's pot luck who turns up . We broke down at 6 pm and didn't get home of a busy motorway for almost 4 hours we were then left at a service station untill 2 am eventually getting home in a sharabang at 7 am. My advice use someone else.

My membership with RAC had just expired and was suppose to auto renew through direct debit but for some reason it did not so when I contacted RAC for a breakdown they wanted me to pay before they would send out an engineer, I did this immediately and they arranged for an engineer to be with me in 90 minutes, it was two hours and still no one contacted me to update so I phoned and was told it would be atleast another hour, I waited and no one contacted me so I phoned them again and was confronted by the same chap I spoke to earlier, he was very arrogant, unapologetic and as a customer I was told I was unreasonable for complaining about the wait, I asked how long it would take to get an engineer? he said sorry sir but we don't have any way of contacting the engineers, he will be with you when he is available! he was now on the phone nearly 15 minutes still trying to argue the fact that the engineers were too busy and they cannot be cotacted..eventually he then said he wont be with me for another 3 hours! I requested him to cancel the callout and that I will be cancelling my membership in the morning. I was charged admin fee for the cancellation £25 this is within 24 hours of becoming a member and not getting any form of service apart from getting a lot of grief dealing with irate staff who wasted hours of my time trying to get an engineer out! The staff are unapologetic, unsympathetic to their customers and left me with a hole in my pocket at a desperate time. I am left with a broked down vehicle at a roadside in the rain. Thank You RAC! very nice people!

m writing this as my driver has been sat on the side of the road for the last 11 hours. 3 hours ago I was told by the RAC that there was a tow truck with my driver. So I went home as I believed the RAC that they had a recovery truck on site after a five hour wait. I have now returned to the office after going home, having to pay for a cab to go back to work as my driver rang me and told me he was still there. And there was no tow truck with him. Why Lie to me. I am now on the phone at ten to midnight for the third time, asking why they lied and where is my tow truck. I have been told that the contractor will be up to another to 2 hours. My advice, if your considering breakdown recovery do not consider the RAC, especially if you are a women on your own. Do not put yourself in this position. Being left on the side of the road for over 12 hours is bad enough without being lied too. Don't ever use the RAC, stand in the street and burn your money, its better value then this service. 3 hrs to recover single female on smart motorway! I broke down at 20.16 on a smart motorway. Steam from engine, split pipe and lost my engine coolant. Auto car. Reported to RAC advised 45 mons for a flatbed. Phoned up 55 mins later as had no contact with eta nor truck turn up. Got told it would be 22.00hrs. Not happy at all, within a 3 mile radius of my location the are 3 major contractors for RAC. 22.05 as still jo contact and no truck. Informed this would be a further 45 min as "contractor was on route and would be with you in 45 mins. Waiting 3 hours for a truck on a smart motorway and they wonder why people get hit by other vehicles. Loan female absolutely freezing and unable to run engine for heat. Best they can do is get it escalated to a manger as I await their call!! Not the first time I have had these issues with RAC. This will be firmly followed by full written complaint accompanied by the recording from my phone of the conversations. Absolutely shocking and appalling treatment and shall leave this review anywhere I can. Quick to take payment... not so quick to get "their vulnerable customers to safety as a priority" quote from their very own recording on the start of the telephone calls. UPDATE truck finally arrived at 22.57 ... the manager returning my call .... still hasn't happened. Ended up having to get a second vehicle to my location as my battery was failing due to running side lights and hazard lights for so long, along with a coat due to shivering to the bone. Phoned the highways agency to explain to them why I was getting a second vehicle, HA advisor very helpful, also disgusted at the lengthy wait I was having to get recovered. The HA operator even phoned the RAC to chase. HA updated me again (as no text or update received still from RAC, and now at 00.24 still had no call back from the escalation to the manager) Biggest farce ... my breakdown occurred on the southbound carriageway of the M1 less than 2 miles from junction 28 (Mansfield A38 exit) the recovery was to my home address just off junction 29a approx 11 miles north of my location ... where did the truck come from ... Stafford, now if that isn't just ludicrous! Oh and as for you reply RAC I most certainly will be complaining, in fuller detail than my review here. Summary of service: Abysmal, poor communication, inadequate health and safety measures to your vulnerable stranded driver. Just exactly what am I paying for?????? And PS how ironic is it that you can answer a negative review in less than an hour but can't keep you membership pledges in the specified timescales ....

Make: BMW X5 2016 The vehicle originally had a burst tyre in Snowdonia National Park on Monday 31st August 2010 and as it was a run flat tyre I managed to drive it to Barmouth town locally in the area without heavy damage to any wheels, just tyre. Unable to find any available replacement tyres, I managed to find a safe place to park the vehicle. We have motor breakdown assistance with HSBC Advance and used the service to arrange a recovery, the call was forwarded to the RAC who acted on behalf of HSBC. I made my first call at approx. 3.30pm to HSBC / RAC who advised they would send a recovery truck and arrange for us to return back to Wolverhampton, with my wife and 2 children. On waiting 2 hours and approx. After making an additional 3 calls I was advised no recovery vehicle were available and offered a taxi service return to Wolverhampton which I took. The vehicle was promised to me by the RAC on Tuesday 1st September 2010. When not received and no communication I called RAC who advised delivery on Wednesday 2nd September. I was then called another 3rd party recovery team to advise my car was involved in a rear end fire, the cause of this was not specified at the time. On a return call when I questioned the cause as it a 2016 car in excellent condition, I was then advised the recovery vehicle has another breakdown to the rear of the truck, this car had caught fire causing major fire damage to the rear of my car. Been advised car is stuck in Gear (Park) and not moveable. The cost to me is a daily cost of £27.00 in taxi charges to work, arranging for my children to be sent to school this week without transport. This has cost me stupid amount of stress and inconvenience as well as money. I have taken time off my workplace to make phone calls and arrange collection of my belongings from the car. I am now without a car for a period I am unsure about and really upset with feedback I received from the RAC call centre where I got the response 'I am very sorry and have not heard of anything like this before' from the manager at the time named Jas, I was also advised she could not handle this case and to send a message to breakdown customer care via email. As you can imagine it was not the answer I was looking for. I also advised the RAC call center manager I request a letter to advise of responsibility for the damage from the RAC and have heard nothing back at all. The service to date received has been very poor. To advise I was not unaware that the RAC had sent a 3 rd party to collect the vehicle and did not give permission for this to be arranged. It is now the 6th October... No car as with CoParts waiting assessment for damage and the RAC have done NOTHING. DO NOT USE THIS SERVICE. I have no car as my insurance did not cover me for a courtesy car although this was not my fault.

I've been trying to get help on breakdown for an hour and a half. Last woman hung up on me when I asked her not to interrupt me. Marooned and no help. Last time I broke down it was 18 hours before they came.

I would have 0 but I couldn’t. I have been with rac since 2013. 2 years ago I had a new battery supplied and fitted by them as they said my one was faulty. It came with a 5 year guarantee. Last week they came out as my battery was flat. I was asked to wait indoors due to social distancing. 10 minutes later there was a knock at the door and the patrol told me warranty wasn’t valid as my battery wasn’t faulty. He then told me he had fitted a new one and I owed £120! If my old battery wasn’t faulty why did I need a new one. I complained but was brushed off with rubbish. I won’t be staying with rac anymore. RIP off merchants!!

Broke down, cold dark night, lone female and was told there was a 3/4 hour wait. My battery had died and my window was open hence the cold. Got a couple of nice guys to start it using jump leads and cancelled the apt. Won’t renew with them next year .
